Borrrrring
Comparisons, they say, are odorous. Nonetheless, I'm not nearly as happy with this book as with the MS Project 2007 Step by Step book. I should note, of course, that MS Project is much more focused as an application than MS Excel, which must serve many, many more purposes. This may account to some extent for the boredom that slows down my progress through the book. The MS Project book provided an entertaining example: scheduling production of a television commercial. The MS Excel book gives occasional examples of managers at Consolidated Messenger doing various bland things. Then we're given a walk-through of a feature, but with little explanation of the choices that the reader is making at each turn. What do we want to accomplish? Why is this a good way to accomplish it? We're never told.I note that many reviewers complain of errors in the book. Before I started, I went to the Microsoft website and copied the errata into my copy. It's time-consuming, and the errata list is not complete or always accurate, but it's worth doing if you're going to devote serious time to learning Excel. Finally, I'd like to note a peculiarity in the writing. The following sentence structure is not unique: "Use the controls in the dialog box that appears to record your theme for later use" (p. 98). Does the dialog box appear? Or does the box appear to record your theme? As I always told my students, it's easy to write so as to be understood. What's hard is to write so as not to be misunderstood.

I'd buy it again
I am currently working with this book and find it very useful. However, the fact that I am using Windows XP and not Windows Vista and/or Windows 7 does make it more difficult to do some of the exercises which causes lots of wasted time. The section of the book dealing with those of us utilizing Windows XP, is of very little help. It would have been nice to have a version of the book prepared utilizing Windows XP. Other than the wasted time searching for items in the exercises, it is very well prepared and useful. I would recommend to others they buy this book.

False Advertising
The book "Microsoft® Office Excel® 2007 Step by Step" is advertised as "New" and containing a CD with additional resources. It's neither NEW, nor does it contain a CD!

Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Step by Step
I would need this book often for all the changes to Excel 2007. The CD was very valuable and am glad it is included. Would like a better process to remove the CD packet from the book so I don't damage the spine. I have ordered all the other Office 2007 books and will use them often.

Excel -lent introductory guide
This manual comes with a CD containing example files for each chapter. There is a searchable ebook version of the manual on the CD.It is a Microsoft publication and consists of two sections a comprehensive quick reference section and a more substantial instructional section. The instructional section of the book is written in a clear and concise style, divided into chapters for the major processes of Excel. Each chapter has a clear section describing the processes and their applications followed by a practical section with a step by step description of how to use each of the particular processes - illustrated by using one of the data files on the CD.I am still working through the book but I reckon that it is a really first class introduction to Excel.

changed review
I solved the problem I mentioned below. I noticed others had it as well so here it is how I did it. I turned off internet for a few minutes, opened Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, security, lowered settings to medium and unticked 'enable protective mode'. Then I was able to install exercises, increased security settings in IE back to medium high which I had previously (including protective mode) and could turn internet back on.I wish I had checked reviews on American Amazon before buying this. They are less favourable there and I can see why. The problem is that I mostly bought this book to use exercises from the enclosed CD. But when I try to instal it I get a message about script errors.

The book is very easy to follow
I gave this 3 stars because initially the book arrived without the cd needed to do the exercises. However, the company when contacted was very helpful in sorting the problem out.The book itself was easy to follow and I found it very useful. It's definitely helped to improve my excel skills needed for work.

Excel
If you are using excel as a new starter or old hand, this book is a very good comprehensive guide, I bought a previously owned copy and have found it very helpful. Recommended.
