The Foundling begins with a chance encounter between an old man named Balbus and a small boy named Elerian. They meet in the depths of a dangerous forest, and believing Elerian to be an orphan, Balbus decides to take him home, a decision that turns his quiet life upside down. Balbus discovers that Elerian is no ordinary child, and that he is being hunted by a number of enemies, all of whom are determined to kill him for reasons of their own. To keep Elerian alive, Balbus is forced to contend with shape shifters, Goblins, and other magical creatures. He is often aided by his good friend Tullius who possesses magical powers. And sometimes, Elerian, who possesses magical powers of his own, is forced to step in and rescue both of his protectors. The Foundling is intended primarily for younger readers and the young at heart, but those wishing to learn more about Elerian's younger days may also find it worth reading. Review: Fantastic story! - I have bought all four of the books in this series so far and I highly recommend them. I love the characters and it's a great story as well, reminds me of the Drizzt saga by R A Salvatore. I have lost many hours of sleep because I can't wait to find out what happens next and I'm really looking forward to book five. Review: highly recommended - i read only the first 10 pages and i could not put this book down, it is full of goblins, trolls, shape changers and a 7 year old boy lost in the woods and found by a loving old man and his dog who fights off the wolves that are closing in after the boy. with the help of his good friend and mage with powers of his own, they spend the rest of their lives hiding the young child. the beast in this book are amazing. the story cleverly told. i could feel my eyes as wide as saucers. the many kinds of beast that constantly searches for the boy really make this story what it is--AWESOME. i garantee you will immediatly purchase the next 2 books, the mage, and the warrior. read the sample, it will immediatly draw you in. happy reading.

So-So Story, but the prose left a lot to desire.
Although the book's plot was interesting, I have to say I was a little disappointed with the calibre of the writing. The prose was over written and seemed at times like a jumble of adjectives to describe the most minor of things. There were punctuation mistakes throughout, including missed speech marks, etc. I good attempt - but worth ยฃ2? I wouldn't have thought so. Enjoyable enough I think, I will not be continuing to read the series though.

A good start to a really good series
The Foundling is the first of a planned seven books in the Hidden Realm Series and I thought overall was a really good read. The author's product description bests summarizes the story's plot, so I will refrain from elaborating. From the very beginning, the author's descriptive writing style of the physical environment and interactions between the humans and creatures, interspersed with uses of magical/mage powers really kept me interested and engaged in the story. I thought the story kept moving at a good pace from encounters with Goblins and other creatures (with the potential for humans on the menu) to good character interplay between Elerian, Balbus and Tullius (each with their own unique personality). On a personal note, I enjoy reading books where the chapters aren't too long and at just over 10 pages or so a chapter, I felt I could take a break at pretty much any point and could always get through a chapter. Very minor distractions included some basic proofreading issues, and a personal difference on the use (or overuse) of commas. Sometimes I felt the placement of too many commas in a sentence added additional breaks which sometimes slowed or altered the natural flow in the dialogue where it wasn't needed. To be fair, everyone has their own writing style. Regardless, for me, it didn't detract from the story. I honestly did find it pretty difficult to put the book down. Having read the first three books before writing this review, I can honestly say, the story only gets better in the Mage and the Warrior. Overall, a very engaging read. Definitely recommend.
