Aluminum Free Deodorant

If you are coming from a mass-market anti-perspirant, this review will only be somewhat helpful for you. Your body will have to adjust to a non-anti-perspirant deodorant first, then a “natural” deodorant on top of that. It will take a few weeks like the Oars and Alps product listing states. I’d recommend finding a mass-market deodorant (only) first, use that for a while, then go to a natural deodorant. Why? Natural deodorants can be irritating to the skin and you don’t want to deal with too many transition issues all at once. I’ve been using non-anti-perspirant deodorant for nearly 10 years. I have tried at least 15 natural deodorant brands over that time, usually coming back to a conventional deodorant because the natural deodorant either: stopped suppressing odor before early afternoon, or irritated the daylights out of my skin (baking soda bad!), or couldn’t be applied without feeling like a piece of crumbly chalk. I’ll leave financials out of this for now since all the naturals did one of the above regardless of price point. I sort of found one natural that was still chalky, but at least suppressed odor nearly all day and didn’t irritate my skin by drying it out, but did cause breakouts! Well, Oars and Alps finally does everything I want it to do. I will say to anybody trying this for the first time to give it two weeks. And that two weeks is AFTER having already transitioned from your anti-perspirant to an intermediary mass market deodorant and having gone through the “detox” process. The first week I switched to O+A, I did have some redness and dryness to my pit skin, but it went away in week two. I’m glad I stuck it out. The O+A deodorant smells great, works all day, goes on smoothly, doesn’t cause breakouts, and lasts longer than many other deodorants, natural or not. Thank goodness … the search is over! (Please O+A, don’t change your formula). Now we get to a sticky subject, which is price. O+A is about twice as expensive per unit than even the already expensive natural deodorants. That might be a deal breaker for some, and that’s a fair reason. I do think O+A lasts a week or two longer than most, but I haven’t actually measured that, and the reason could totally just be there’s more product in a typical unit sold. I think there are a lot of people that will find O+A deodorant to be worth the premium. It will change your mind about natural deodorants. If you’re committed to the idea of using a natural deodorant but don't want to compromise, give this stuff a shot but stay patient to let it work without irritation after proper transitioning.

Here are my requirements to wearing natural deodorants. (and this one does a great job meeting all of them). 1. Must last at least 8 hours (a work day) -> under normal work stress this deodorant holds up, doesn't stop you from sweating, just smelling bad. If you're having a tough day, sweating and then expecting to go out to happy hour after the work day, then I will re-apply. Also follow instructions for applying, if you apply immediately after shower (or took a real hot shower) then you literally just watered the product down. Cool down and dry off then apply. Golden. 2. Can Re-Apply without Skin Irritation -> because my natural deodorant trials of other products required re-application during the day to avoid smelling, i wanted a deodorant I can just do a quick swipe under each arm without irritation or bad smell ( BO + deodorant). If you have a bad diet, then your sweat will be YUCK anyways and you should use a towelette before re-application. (if not you run risk of irritating the skin) If you diet is clean and you drink water like a normal human then your sweat is less toxic and I can reapply without any irritations. 3. Doesn't stain white dress shirts yellow -> i've tried a lot of naturals with baking soda and they seem to help with sweating (and first 2 requirements) which is cool, but at the cost of staining your shirts... and the more you use the bigger the stain... this product does not leave stain on my undershirts or dress shirts. 4. Pleasant Smell - this deodorant has a pleasant smell. I'm happy it is not over-fragranced because Fragrance = oils = chemicals = skin irritations. 5. TSA Size - because of requirement #2, I always carry this in my carry on.

So far so good - though the scents are very faint, and the odor protection doesn't last as long as traditional antiperspirant/deodorant products. This is not a miracle product, but no aluminum-free natural deodorant will be. I've tried several competing products and this one seems to balance the best of all worlds. Whereas other similar products tend to have overbearing, cheap-smelling perfume scents intended to mask body odor, every Oars & Alps scent is very pleasant and sophisticated comparatively ("California Coast" and "Eucalyptus Spearmint" are particularly nice) - however very subtle, and don't last very long. The scents last a couple hours at most. However, the natural odor protection ingredients generally do a fine job of keeping body odor to a minimum for most of the day - though re-application is necessary on hot or active/gym days. The product also goes on clear, which prevents short and long term staining of clothing - a key attribute I require in a natural deodorant. My main gripe about this product is the package and applicator design. The package and applicator is cylindrical (like a small, mini can of soda), and the surface area of the product is round and quite small (as if designed for a small woman, or a child). This makes application difficult, as you can't make a few easy up-down swipes - rather, you need to swipe the product in several directions or in a zig-zag motion across the underarm. I haven't quite settled on a technique that works best - maybe a swirling motion? I wish the package and applicator had the flat, elongated/oval shape of a traditional deodorant for easier application. Also, the cylindrical plastic packaging itself is oddly thick and heavy - very heavy, like a small grenade or something - and the top doesn't simply snap on and off, rather it screws on and off. It makes the product feel "premium" but it's a bit excessive.

Update review 2020 So I bought this product before the company did any education or provided any information on the “detoxification of your armpits”. Like most, I had no idea that was a thing, and never heard about it. Having job that I regularly interact with people, I could not take the time to go through the detox phase due to the risk of having bad body order, which is absolutely not acceptable in my line of work. Long story short, the quarantine happened and I was not able to see patients for 2 months. I figured now is the best time to give this a full shot, if I ever was going to. So I slowly weened myself off of my normal mainstream aluminum deodorant. after about 2-3 weeks of not using the aluminum base deodorant, I did not have any of the burning, red irritation that I previously have gotten from this product. I enjoy the scent, and I can say it lasts the entire work day for me. I have an active job and I am constantly on my feet. Since I am a bigger guy, I keep a stick of this in my desk just incase I need to re apply, however I have not needed to as of yet. I bumped original rating to 5 stars. After the detox processes this has been by far the best natural no aluminum deodorant I have tried. If you have the time to do the process, I highly recommend it. I have now been using it for a few months and I have not got burned from it once. Original review 2019 Loved this product and want to still love it. I love the smell and it actually lasts all day for me, even when being very active. The BIG problem .. after a week of using i have such painful irritation under my arm pits now. I’m so disappointment because I loved this before the irritation happened. I guess I have to stop using it until the irritation goes away. If anyone knows which ingredient does this, let me know. I have no allergies at all and do not have sensitive skin.

The only real positive to this are the scents. They smell nice, they don't last anywhere near as long as stated. I tried seeing if I could get past some of the irritation, seeing as it's something new I switched to, but after a month of using it daily, I eventually noticed my armpits much darker with red rings. I tried two of them, thinking maybe it was that i had an itchy reaction to. Nope. I WOULD not recommend this product. Unfortunate waste of $40.

This may work differently for someone with a different body chemistry but for me it did not work well I had to re-apply it multiple times a day and still found myself smelling badly. This is just one natural deodorant and a long list of natural deodorants that I have tried most of them do not work well and I do like the smell of this one but again did not work for me. The one that worked best for me was bravo Sierra brand deodorant, the ones that smelled best to me were Schmitz brand deodorant. But everybody’s body chemistry is different and before I switched to natural deodorants a few years ago I used to use the clinical strength stuff so I may not be a good example for someone who is just an average under arm sweater. No natural deodorant stops you from sweating but if you find a good one that works with your body chemistry it will stop you from stinking so this may work for you but did not for me. I found myself having to clean my armpits with a little vinegar in the middle of the day and reapplying the deodorant otherwise even reapplying did not help. The bravo Sierra brand I only had to apply once during the day and it holds throughout even during workouts. The Schmidt‘s brand smells better to me but I do not like the texture of it, the bravo Ciara brand is much smoother application. This brand of deodorant has a pretty smooth application so I did like that I also like the container it comes in so those are the pros but again I did not like how it worked for me.

Oars + Alps really does make deodorant that actually meets the claims that the big companies like to make. Wife approved (it was a birthday gift). She bought it for me because I was tired of using a big brand deodorant and wanted something a little unique. The scent: "Aspen Air" is my favorite scent of all of the Oars+Alps scents. It is very light, and airy but not floral and doesn't smell like laundry detergent. Deodorant is often to overpowering, like it's trying to double as cologne. This has a crisp, airy and sweet smell that's very light. It's only pungent as you apply it, and really it isn't that strong then either. As you go throughout the day the smell is there but only subtly. I've received compliments on the smell from men and women alike. The shape: This deodorant stick reminds me of the original Old Spice deodorant sticks. It's actually quite nice to hold. While it doesn't have the oval shape that makes it convenient for application across your pit, the circular shape is a nice throwback and welcome feel in the hand. I don't know how to say this without being subjective. This deodorant feels natural. I've used Speed Stick and Old Spice for years but they always felt... manufactured or man-made if you will. The smell, texture and feel of this deodorant comes across as though its made by someone churning plant based ingredients in a wooden bowl rather than a bunch of chemicals boiled in a giant metal vat. I dont know how to explain it but this stuff just "feels" better. It won't stop you from sweating. It's not anti-perspirant. IMHO I don't think it's smart to stop your body's important functions (like sweating). On days that I sweat heavily I don't smell if I use this. In fact I can apply in the morning, spend all day sweating doing yard work outside and then get in a 30min workout in the afternoon and still not smell nasty. Although at that point the nice Aspen Air scent is gone. Safe to say this stuff does its job. And it does it well. If your looking for an outside of the box brand and something more natural.. this is it.

Great smell and it didn’t make my underarms red or peel. I used it for about 3 months and threw it out. The biggest problem with this deodorant is that it does nothing for odor. Even if you shower once a day and apply. You’ll have to re- apply several times a day. In a few hours you can smell yourself and I work a desk job. So no exercise or anything. If you want to constantly worry about stinking around others then go and waste money on this. Great idea but not an effective product. Just sad.

Because it was a twin pack the second one once opened did not screw up so is defective and ive missed the return window of time can you help .

The scenes smell great and natural. The deo doesn't leave any marks on my shirts which is highly appreciated. The deo doesn't last long at all. Special on us brown folk that trend to expire more often.
