Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 24mm f/1.4G ED Fixed Zoom Lens with Auto Focus for Nikon DSLR Cameras

I had just purchased my 24-70 and 70-200 to compliment my d800e, and I knew that I might want to have a fast wide angle prime in my kit. Some of you would think I am crazy to spend this kind of money on a prime when my zoom covers this focal length. OK, I am crazy and love to shoot natural low light as well. I just attended a large motorcycle rally and was not sure of my lighting conditions but knew I would be both inside and outside all week, shooting quickly with little control of my subjects. All I can say is that the resulting images are super crisp, and the bokeh is creamy smooth, as pleasing as I could have hoped for. It is always frustrating to take images that have a lot of background clutter but with a wide apeture lens, you can really call attention to your focus point. I ran wide open the whole week. I am very happy with the sharpness and flexibility of this lens. It is a step up in quality from any non gold band lens, and you can see it on a 4 by 6 inch print as well as a 16 by 20 enlargement. For me the image sharpness is everything and I prefer to do as little post work as is possible. I have not had to do almost anything post processing as the images are edge to edge crisp as they can be. I have not seen any problems with chroma bleeding over or any other things to fix post processing. The lens focuses very quickly, you hardly notice it during shooting. This is a superb, very fast lens that will give you more light than what your eye can see. If you can see it with your eyes, then this lens will capture it. Excellent investment and I am almost used to zooming by moving my big two feet back and forth a bit. I love old school photography.

9/27/2014 After I month of use I wanted to say that I go to this lens more than my 105mm Micro f/2.8G and my 50mm f/1.4G (I am building my setup again after a run-in with a thief and I made the decision to only go with primes.) This lens makes the world look like a much better place than it actually is. I have also had the 14-24mm f/2.8G. I was curious on whether I would miss my wide super zoom. Nope. This lens is sharper, faster, lighter, and everything that I need. The 14-24mm is a wonderful lens too, but it is huge and you cannot put filters on it making worthless sometimes. I do not regret this purchase at all, and I highly recommend. 8/28/2014 I am writing this review after one day of ownership, but I have used this lens several times in the past. I received a new unopened lens in good packaging from Amazon. Kudos to that since this was shipped to Alaska, adding to the susceptibility of a few more bumps in the road. The copy that I received has dead on accurate focus with my D610. Haven't worked it through it's paces yet, but it is ridiculously sharp at f/1.4. Can only imagine how sharp it will be up a few stops. As far as my general experience with this particular model, this specific copy aside. They are the sharpest lens out there by Nikon. Bokeh is good when you can make it, you really have to close focus wide open to get it. It is a great portrait lens if you are incorporating background, it is not a great lens for blowing out the background. You also have to be careful with the typical aberrations associated with wide angle lens when using for portraits. This lens is kinder than most with those, but they still do rear their ugly head (or Pinocchio nose.) This lens is a powerhouse for landscape, cityscape, etc. Great walk around lens. Ridiculously sharp. You have to be used to focusing 1.4's. I highly recommend this lens if you are looking for a sharp, fast, wide angle prime lens. You really can't find much better in that department than this lens. This is better glass than anything Chihuly makes (I am a fan) :) I will revise this review if my opinion differs at some point. I have been using the 24mm 1.4 over 6 months. It is by far my favorite lens. As a reference point, I also own 50mm 1.4, 24-70 2.8, and 35mm 1.8. Pros: 1. For me the top reason to buy this lens is debt of field control. I love this lens for environmental portraits, where I want my subject/s in focus and the surrounding area in view but less pronounced. 2. Low light shooting at 1.4 is great. But I don't wait for low lint to shoot at f1.4. Image quality on this lens wide open is excellent. No compromises at all. With the excellent high iso performance available and excellent flashes, I do not have to rely on this lens for low light performance to be honest. But it does have the advantage when needed. 3. Very low distorsion, if any. Especially on a DX body where it functions as a 35mm, it requires no correction for distorsion. This means less photoshop work. 4. Given it's quality, I would consider it light. Don't get me wrong it is a heavy lens but it is half the size and weight of the 24-70 2.8. 5. 24 1.4 focuses faster than my 50 and 35. 6. It is very sharp at all apertures. This is an excellent lens on FX or DX bodies. If you like wide angle, this is going to be your favorite lens, go for it... I hope this helps

It's a fast lens, good for indoor events. The focus is not very sharp, maybe I did not get the best one. It's OK on D90, but very disappoiting on D70s.

To me this lens opens up a lot of potentials. Not to repeat many Pros that others have commented (great low light, sharp wide open, nice background separation, etc.), this lens demands some learning curves from me. The focus is tailored more for precision than speed and seems to be fast enough in actual usage. I have learned to be steady on the focus before pressing down the shutter. The focus on F100 camera works fine so far. For some shots when the subject was running toward me (left no time for checking the focus), I was surprised that the focus was pretty snappy and dead on. Besides, to get a nice portrait with creamy blur it would require the camera / lens to be pretty close to the subject, which can be a bit of challenge for some. Anyway, this is one great prime and has become another go-to lens besides the 105 DC.

The lens began overexposing after only 4 months of light usage. Underexposure in camera manual mode is the only way to get a correct exposure now.

très bon objectif en faible lumière pour qui souhaite utiliser la grande ouverture sans vouloir trop monter dans les hauts iso. si on ferme de 1 à 2 diaph, il devient excellent... Attention, c'est un objectif relativement lourd (620gr)... si, on est moins exigeant il est aussi possible de choisir le Nikon 24mm F/1.8 (355gr) tout aussi bon et moins douloureux pour le portefeuille...

Die Objektive dieses Typs (oder zumindest eine große Anzahl von Exemplaren davon) scheinen ein ganz ausgeprägtes Problem mit dem Autofokus zu haben. Ich habe mittlerweile sage und schreibe vier! verschiedene Exemplare ( 2x in den USA, 2x in Deutschland) gekauft und alle wieder zurückgegeben. Es ist fast unmöglich, ab einer Entfernung von ein paar Metern ein scharfes Bild mit offener Blende zu machen. Fast jeder erste Versuch liegt total daneben. Erst wenn man mehrere Male den Auslöser bis zum Fokuspunkt drückt, tastet sich das Objektiv quasi an den richtigen Fokuspunkt an. Ein Irrtum oder Kameradefekt ist eigentlich völlig ausgeschlossen, da ich es mit zwei verschiedenen Kameras getestet habe und, wie gesagt, mit jetzt vier verschiedenen Exemplaren. Ich besitze weitere drei Objektive mit Blende 1,4 oder 1,8 und alle funktionieren perfekt mit den Kameras. Und ich rede hier nicht von leicht verringerter Schärfe bei Offenblende, sondern von richtiger Unschärfe! Definitiv ein Fehler des Autofokus. Bis Nikon diesen Fehler korrigiert oder sich zumindest mal dazu äußert, kann ich das Objektiv wirklich niemandem empfehlen. Leider, denn die optische Qualität dieses Objektives ist wirklich mehr als atemberaubend. Wenn es einem gelingt, ein scharfes Bild zu machen (z.B. mit manuellem Fokus und liveview), sind die Ergebnisse unglaublich. Besser als alles, was ich je gesehen habe. Dann sind die Auflösung und vor allem auch Farbübertragung und Kontrast eine Klasse für sich. Aber was nützt es, wenn der Autofokus praktisch nutzlos ist... Ein Umstand, der bei dem Preis dieses Objektives noch ärgerlicher ist. Update: Ein fünftes gekauftes Exemplar wurde mehrfach bei Nikon justiert. Erst jetzt funktioniert das Objektiv und bringt seine Leistung. Ich bleibe daher trotzdem bei meiner Bewertung von nur einem Stern, da der Aufwand, ein funktionierendes Produkt zu bekommen, einfach enorm war. Wer es trotzdem probieren möchte, kann mit Glück oder viel Ärger ein außergewöhliches Objektiv bekommen. Man sollte es aber wirklich wollen! Nachtrag: nachdem ich ca. 1 Jahr lang das fünfte Exemplar an einer D700 nutzen konnte, habe ich die Bewertung von einem auf fünf Sterne erhöht. Einfach nur deshalb, weil es - funktonierender AF vorausgesetzt - an einer Vollformatkamera absolut außergewöhnlich ist. Also fünf Sterne trotz des Ärgers!

Die bei einigen aufgetretenen AF Probleme haben mich lange davon abgehalten das Objektiv zu kaufen. Als es dann im Amazon Warehouse angeboten wurde war ich doppelt skeptisch, da es ja vermutlich ein Unzufriedener zurückgesickt haben musste. Da ich aber mit dem Nikonservice sehr gute Erfahrungen habe, dachte ich mir: egal. Kauf es und sende es an Nikon zum Justieren. Und nun? Günstig gekauft. Auf die D700 montiert und: KEINE PROBLEME! Sehr gut justierter AF. Auch bei 1,4 exakt da wo er sein sollte. Selbst in dunkelster Nacht ohne AF-Hilfslicht sehr gute AF Leistung. Keine Probleme am Tag, in Innenräumen oder in der Dämmerung. Ich vermute ganz ehrlich, dass einfach viele Hobbyknipser keine Ahnung haben wie präzise man mit Offenblende 1,4 selbst arbeiten muss. Nach dem 50, 85 und 35 ist es nun mein viertes 1,4er. Bin mit allen hochzufrieden und würde sie wieder kaufen. Aber wie gesagt: Offenblende 1,4 ist im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes ein schmaler scharfer Grat auf dem sich der Fotograf zurechtfinden muss. Mit der D700 bei 1,4, ISO 6.400 und 1/30 sec. sieht man auf dem Bild in der Nacht im übrigen mehr als mit dem menschlichen Auge!!! Das heißt dieses Objektiv fotografiert mit einer guten Kamera ohne Stativ alles was der Mensch in der Nacht auch sehen kann ohne Blitz! Und von allen 1,4er hat es noch den größten Bereich an Schärfentiefe zu bieten.

Ich habe mir das Nikkor 24mm 1:1,4G kurz nach der Markteinführung gekauft und entsprechend schon bei diversen Anlässen ausgiebig "getestet". Alle hier aufgeführten Rezessionen kann ich (zumindest ansatzweise) nachvollziehen, was für den Leser im ersten Augenblick als Widerspruch erscheinen mag. Nach einer Kamerainspektion sind mir anfänglich auftretende Probleme mit dem Autofokus nicht mehr aufgefallen, obwohl vor der Kamerainspektion nur das 24mm 1:1,4G Auffälligkeiten gezeigt hat und andere Nikkor 1:1,4 Objektive unauffällig waren. Nach dem Kauf des Objektivs war ich erst einmal mit dem Objektiv eine längere Zeit nicht glücklich, aber nachdem ich mich an das Objektiv gewöhnt habe, gehört es zu den Objektiven die immer mitgenommen werden. Im Nachhinein hat sich der Kauf für mich absolut gelohnt. Vorteile: - bereits bei Offenblende absolut scharf Nachteile: - Fokussierung nicht immer einfach - langsamer Autofokus - Gewicht - Preis Fazit: Wer ein lichtstarkes Weitwinkelobjektiv (von Nikon) sucht, muss dieses Objektiv kaufen und wird mehr als glücklich sein. All diejenigen, die noch keine Erfahrung mit lichtstarken Objektiven haben, sollten erst einmal an einem 50mm Objektiv über längere Zeit schauen, was so eine Lichtstarke Festbrennweite bei Offenblende macht, und ob man so etwas auch als Weitwinkel haben möchte. Für einen Anfänger ist dieses Objektiv sicherlich nichts, aber die harten Fans von ambient light Fotografie werden um dieses Objektiv nicht herum kommen.

Es hat den gleichen Bildeindruck des 85/1.4 und mein Exemplar stellt zuverlässig scharf (D750). Der Autofokus ist gemächlich, aber ohne Schleifgeräusche. Es ist beeindruckend schwer und ein Hoya Gold UV-Filter vignettiert nicht. Ein sehr erfreuliches Objektiv für Innenräume und enge Städte.
