Synology 6 Bay NAS DiskStation - DS1618+ (Diskless)

It arrived a few days late but it works as it says. Doing a great job! 10TB used out of 14TB (it was diskless) on 24/7 as you would expect!

I bought this to replace a 10-year-old super loud, power-hungry server in my basement. Absolutely brilliant product, works as advertised and I'm very happy. Shucked some cheap WD 10TB EasyStore drives for storage. I also replaced the fans with quieter Noctua units. I have 3 RAID 1 arrays using BTRFS: 2x SSDs for the Synology OS & VMs, 2x WD 10TB for media, and 2x WD 4TB for surveillance cold storage. Be warned; the Atom CPU in this model is not a great choice for running any serious Virtual Machines. I am running 2 Windows Server VMs: a domain controller and a Ubiquiti Controller. They're quite sluggish, but get the job done. I installed 32GB ECC Corsair RAM for 3 reasons: 1) dual-channel RAM runs faster 2) spare RAM for VMs 3) BTRFS requires ECC RAM to provide full data protection. BTRFS is about as close as you can get to 100% data protection right now but only if you use ECC RAM, and this is the cheapest Synology NAS with support for ECC. I tried Surveillance Station and found it to be under-powered and unreliable. The Atom CPU just isn't up to the task. However, as a NAS and very basic VM host it works wonderfully. I back up weekly to a WD 10TB EasyStore, and swap it out once a month with an identical off-site unit. Absolutely first class for keeping your data safe. Great job Synology!

I was very happy with the NAS however suddenly I won't boot. In my opinion it is not wrong to buy this device however keep backups (of the device config as well as the data) in mind.

Exceptional NAS. Some would argue for FreeNAS/unraid/other with ZFS, etc. Good option - stating that, this is my second Synology. My last one lasted me 7 years. 7 years! Flawless execution, and was supported until the day I replaced it. With 4 NICs and an expandable PCIe slot for 10gbps This device checked the boxes. For my use case (vsphere/ESXi) I needed exceptional, scalable storage with no hassle management. Synology makes an ultra consistent, high performance device in the 1618+.

As always, Synology creates awesome products that just work. I purchased this unit as my primary unit, and I'm now using my older DS1813+ as my backup unit. It works really great with snapshot replication, so it now replicates all my data overnight, which is what I wanted. I'd want to write all about it's features and such, but we'd be here for a long time. So I'll just cover the main pros and cons: PROS: * It just works, seriously, pop in some drives, follow the web-based setup, and you're up and running. * Synology Hybrid Raid makes things really flexible, you can mix and match drives and it will give you the most storage possible. * Lots of applications that can be used on it, including Docker, which is super powerful, I even run a GUI-based linux using Docker so I can run an old legacy app I wrote. CONS: * CPU is fine for normal NAS tasks and basic file extractions and such, however, the unit is supposed to be capable of running 'multiple virtual machines', but it's so slow it's almost impossible to run even a single VM on the CPU. Luckily I'm not super reliant on this feature. * Fans are smaller, and therefore louder than my old 1813+. Not that they are super loud, but when you're within 2 metres of the unit, they are definitely audible. In short, yes, I'd recommend this product, just make sure you run it through a high-end surge protector if you decide to get one, the power supplies are quite sensitive to surges and it's a pain getting a replacement power supply.
