Is this game similar to Photosynthesis?

Not really. The only thing they have in common is the 3D tree(s). Both are great games, but photosynthesis is more of a low chance, mensa select game where the smartest/most experienced player is going to win just about every time. Everdell is a thematic card based game with worker placement elements - probably more similar to something like 7 Wonders. Definitely still a lot of strategy, but a lot of luck involved with how the cards come out.

Everdell is a Tableau builder, worker placement with a fantastic theme. Short answer is Wingspan is all of the above as well. It is also one of the top games of the last few years. Some good worker placement games with a good theme are raiders of the north sea, Lords of waterdeep, and Stone age. Some good Tableau builders with a good theme are Splendor, Machi Koro, and Century Spice Road.

My daughter is 9 and we play DnD, would this game be appropriate (based on complexity) for her age?

I also have a daughter of 9 and she plays Gloomhaven with me... she loves this game! Should be perfect! Of course, there are some things that need to be explained, but very accessible for that age.
