The TVP Cookbook: Using the Quick-Cooking Meat Substitute

Practical for those trying to save money and vegans alike!
Recipes from all countries. There are suggestions for other vegan products like nutritional yeast "cheese" sauce and explains other products used in some recipes. Tells how to make enchiladas and how to make the sauce that goes on them and spaghetti balls with the sauce to go with it instead of leaving you having to look this stuff up. The recipes are relatively simple. Some stuff you may have to get online or at a specialty store but it is affordable like to TVP 14.00 but it makes 5 lbs. at 2.80 a pound (which is way cheaper than 90% lean ground beef at 4.50 lb in Ohio) and shipping is included in Prime if you have it. I find the book practical for people trying to save money and people with a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Last night we had the TVP and Bean Burritos and they were like Chipole only way cheaper!

Not a bad little book
Just bought a pile of TVP flakes and chunks, because I'm trying to wean my family off the amount of meat they (not me) eat. Also ordered this book to go along with the TVP product, figuring I would need some help figuring out how to incorporate this stuff into the menu, and that it might not be just an easy substitution issue. So far I'm pretty impressed with the recipes I've tried - Sloppy Joes, Curried Chunks, Oriental Chunks. They tasted great, and the recipes are very simple and quick to make. While the texture of the TVP chunks is a little off from the texture of, say, chicken, the combination of spices and flavors the recipes incorporate balance everything out nicely. My husband is the only one who knows I'm feeding them a meat substitute. I have two teen boys who would be quick to say "Yuck" if I told them what they were eating, no matter how good it tastes, so I think I'll wait a little longer - when I can get to the point where I can tell them they've been eating TVP for the past couple months, I'll tell them!! My only wish, relative to the book, is that it contained more recipes!

Prepare to use it OFTEN!
This is the most amazing book. When I purchased it I thought I would refer to it on occasion however, I find I refer to it almost everytime I am menu planning or just looking for an idea. The Country Chili recipe is my favorite with an amazing taste. My husband would not eat TVP if he was starving so I simply didn't mention the chili was made with TVP. Not only did this dedicated meat eater love the first bowl, he went back for a second and third bowl! Same thing when I fixed the Chuckwagon Soup. I even received a compliment on how good both dinners tasted. I also like that she often gives you options to do part of the work in either the microwave or in a skillet. Veggie Burgers were a lot of work but also very yummy. This is a great book for someone new to using TVP (like me). I have really enjoyed the book, I hope you do too.

TVP Is Not Scary To Cook With; This book Is Definitely A Help
I was introduced to TVP when my kids were small. It was used as a filler in a business setting kitchen. I couldn't tell it wasn't animal meat. I bought several bags of TVP in different flavors and used this cookbook to help me with recipes. I did not tell my family; they were scarce when it was time to cook; so I didn't tell them. it definitely made our food budget go farther. I'm a good cook and this book was easy to read and understand. Just follow the directions correctly, you can't go wrong.

Not bad
I've only briefly reviewed it so far, and have not yet tried any of the recipes, but some of them look really promising. I would caution people that soy in large amounts, especially if it is GMO, is somewhat controversial. A balanced diet, even a vegan one, should contain a variety of different foods, including different protein sources. TVP can be one of them in my opinion, but should never be the only one!!!

Good little retro book - the TVP 101
I have recently re-discovered TVP for the vegan boon that it truly is and this is a great source of information. I have updated many of the recipes to more modern versions of spices and varied add-ins but it remains a great little primer. Highly recommended for anyone trying to go meatless.

TVP. The way to Go
I just received my order today for the TVP Cookbook and I want to try as many recipes as I can. The Lentil soup looks delicious and so does the Sauerbraten. Thank you for the quick sending of this book. I've used TVP in my own Chili non Carne recipe and this will be a welcomed addition to my collection. Thank you.

Disappointing
Really boring food with little specific information on using TVP. The recipes all seem to come from the 1960's. This is not a guide to using TVP but a small collection of recipes which just happened to have some TVP. I hoped to have information on the different types of TVP., ways to prepare each type, substitution tables, and vegan options. Nope. just TVP casseroles.

Very useful recipes
Even omnivores need alternate sources of protein and TVP is a very useful one to add to the repertoire that includes tofu, seitan and legumes. The recipes in this book are very handy to have.
