Don't miss this one.
If you are a Mary Poppins fan you would be cheating yourself by missing this one. Travers doesn't make you go through a lot of background or set-up before she gets right into the story. By the title you can know that the family is in need of Mary again. This time because a baby has been born. Travers doesn't skimp on the "magic" of this story and in some places (especially with the baby) it is very imaginative and sometimes touching. The children we already know from the previous book are a little older now and much more likeable. Mary is less severe and we see a tenderness we haven't seen before. Children would not be able to grasp a lot of this story. Some scenes are probably too detailed for them to imagine. I do recommend this for mid-teens on up.

The Sequel to Mary Poppins
Mary Poppins Comes Back is the second book about Mary Poppins. I wouldn't say it is quite as good as the first one; it lacks some of the newness and shine and surprise, but it is still enjoyable. Mary Poppins finally returns to Cherry-Tree Lane and everything is right again. She and Jane and Michael and the twins have more wild adventures, with a lot of quirky new characters introduced, such as Mr. Turvy, her cousin who does the opposite of what he wants to do on every Second Monday. Travers painted the world of Mary Poppins just as well, and I think the only reason that I like Mary Poppins better is (as I said), because it is more surprising (since it's the first book about her.) What is kind of odd though is that Jane and Michael are always vaguely surprised when Mary Poppins does something astonishing, like when she shows up at the gathering of Constellations, even though they've seen her do such things before. But I suppose you can never get used to something like that. You can read all of my reviews at my blog novareviews.blogspot.com.

Great Trip Down Memory Lane w/a Whole New Appreciation
Seeing the movie "Saving Mr. Banks" this past year caused in me a spark to re-visit all of the Mary Poppins series books of my chldhood. What a wonderful thing it is to be able to experience again the wonder of P.L. Travers' wonderful imagination. Some of my friends got caught up in my pleasure and were soon reading this series, as well. On a cold, rainy afternoon in the great North West, (after reading this book and the others in the series), I popped the dvd movie "Mary Poppins" into the player and watched it with renewed appreciation for the author who finally let these wonderful stories come to life on the big screen.

Wonderful Mary Poppins!
The series of Mary Poppins books are wonderful and so imaginative for little children. I wasn't crazy about the movie, okay. Was a little hesitant about trying the books. Got the series when my boys where young children, they are in their 20's now. They loved them, quite the fantasy. Now that I have a my first granddaughter I am buying her 1 book at a time. My daughter is trilled. Looking forward to reading them to her also. Would suggest them to everyone.

The classic, including the original illustrations.
Such perfect bedtime reading! The original Mary Poppins is a lot funnier and smarter than the sweetened Disney version.

Walt Disney Liked These Stories???
I loved the movies: Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns and Saving Mr. Banks. Since Saving Mr. Banks opened my eyes about the drastic difference between the books and the movie, I decided to read (listen to) the original books. Now I was expecting quite a difference between them, and was not expecting Mary to be the bright, smiley, song-singing nanny that Disney created, but I was surprised at how nasty and mean spirited she was. I didn't like her at all. I read the first 2 books, and part of the 3rd and had to stop. (Luckily I was busy driving or doing chores while listening, or I would have given up much sooner.) Some of the chapters just rambled on and on, to the point where I had to ask myself "why are they still talking about this?" And Mary was the queen of gaslighting!! I am quite surprised that these were beloved children's novels and even more surprised that Walt Disney liked them. Kudos to Walt and his crew for making this dreadful woman into the most loved nanny of all time.

the real thing
After having stumbled on a shortened unreadable version, now found the real thing, part two of one of my favourtie childhood books. And by the way - there's more to P.L.Travers' life than modern movie makers allow you to know ...
