Will this stylus work with the Ipad Air 4th gen?

YES! Pencil A8 can work for iPad Air (3rd, 4th and 5th 2022 generation). If you connected Apple Pencil before please disconnect to use A8. You could turn off Bluetooth or go to Settings > Bluetooth > Find “Apple Pencil” > Tap "i" in a blue circle > Tap Forget This Device

Can you replace the batteries on this? My son has only had his for a short while and it has stopped working.

It should have came with a charger. This doesn't require batteries. To power on and off you have to tap the end "eraser part" like 2 or three times. It just needs to be charged. You can use any typeC charger if you can't find the one it came with.
