One of the best purchases for the kitchen that I've ever made.
I can't say enough good things about this trash can. I purchased this a little over two years when I needed to replace a pricey, foot-operated plastic can from a certain big name manufacturer because its junky, plastic pedal mechanism broke. I saw some of the negative reviews for the NINESTARS trash can but it was basically the same price as the one that I was replacing so I figured why not give it a shot. The opening mechanism is just about perfect in terms of how it responds. Because of my previous pedal-based trash can, I was used to approaching from the front to reach the foot pedal with my hand low to avoid getting slapped by the opening door. I find that this same hand path is ideal for this trash can as the approach triggers the sensor and then I can usually toss whatever I have in before the lid has even finished opening all the way. Super quick and efficient. Also important to mention, you don't even have to wave your hand (which may be holding something messy) to trigger the lid -- just walking up to the can is usually enough. Another great feature is that the lid stays open as long as the sensor still detects your hand. That means that this trash can will automatically handle the cases where you are clearing off a plate or something similar where you need to spend more time over the open lid. There are also manual Open and Close buttons for cases where you want to keep it open for prolonged periods of time. The metal of the can is relatively thin which I imagine some people might not like but it has the advantage that it keeps the trash can light weight and easy to move around. Battery life has been great. I've maybe replaced the batteries one or two times. Regarding reliability, I highly recommend that you try to keep the trash can lid as clean as possible. Trash can lids get dirty from all the food stuff getting tossed in them. For a trash can like this with a motion sensor and mechanical lid, you need to be sure you keep it clean for it to function ideally. I've made it a habit that whenever I change the bag, I wave the can open and then turn it off so I can quickly wipe off any gunk that has gotten on the lid. You'll want to be sure the sensor is kept clean as the location of it makes it easy to inadvertently drop gunk on when throwing stuff away. If there is junk blocking the sensor, it isn't going to respond ideally to your hand motions and in some cases will trigger without a hand being present. Any issues I've had where the can suddenly wasn't responding well, was opening when no one was near it, etc. have been resolved by simply cleaning the sensor and then changing the batteries if that doesn't help. One thing that could be tweaked is if they figured out how to limit the "walk by" openings. Mine is in a high traffic area right by the fridge and this results in the lid opening an unnecessary number of times due to people walking by. My thought is that a "sensitivity" knob that lets you control the distance it is sensitive to or the time it requires motion before opening could do the trick so those of us who need it in a high traffic area could dial this back and those who don't could keep the lid super responsive. Another thing that would be nice is if they could figure out how to make the controls more intuitive. A surprising number of people will stand there and stare at the trash can confused when they first encounter it. Some will hit to Open button to open it, some will try to pull the lid open by hand (which I imagine might not be good for the motor), and some will hit the Close button to close it even if they figured out that it is motion operated on opening. Expect to have to train some people on how to use your trash can. While "get smarter friends" would be good advice for handling this, you don't get to pick your family so it would be nice if somehow the controls were designed in a way that made it clearer that it was motion based.

This trash can is great
Ok. I was skeptical I have never had a motion activated trash can before so I thought it would be one big pain in the..yeah, heiney ..we’ll go with that..heiney. I thought the concept sounded cool but there was too much that could go wrong. For instance, I’m standing there after cracking a half dozen eggs with a few of the broken shells in my hands. Gooey egg stuff dripping all over and it wouldn’t open fast enough thus getting said gooey-ness all over my floor. I gotta say..didn’t happen. The can opens pretty swiftly and then stays open for a few seconds before it closes. Nice! So when I got my new trash can, I saw that it takes 2 size D (I think, maybe C, no I’m sure D) batteries and ah-ha there it is. My thought was this thing is going to suck up the juice and I’m going to have to change the batteries every other day. Nope. I have had this can a month and two weeks and still going strong. I wash my hands a couple dozen times a day too, using paper towel to dry them. It has stayed shiney and pretty because it is super easy to clean. I am thoroughly impressed and glad I got it. For the price point, this can rocks.

Great upgrade for kitchen
Writing to address some reviews about the sensitivity of the motion detector. I was wary of this when I ordered, and I appreciate all of the critical comments on this can and others, they really help. But my personal experience is that the sensor is dialed in perfectly. We have an average size kitchen, not a lot of traffic, and the can is in the corner away from sink and stove activity, but near the back door, so people passing by often. Haven't had a single accidental open yet. But the sensor responds quickly when i wave my hand or the thing I'm about to throw away over the lid. It sounds silly, but this can is bringing me a lot of amusement at the moment. So much better, quieter and more practical than the foot-stomper that it replaced. And we're using recharchable C-cells. I'll update my review when I have a sense of how long the charge lasts. One last thing about the sensor: There's a red blinky light that comes on when you're in proximity of the can. I think maybe that's a pre-sensor and it kicks the main sensor into alert, but does not open the lid. We notice this sometimes when walking by. So when that's blinking, the can is probably more sensitive and ready to flip open. It's also possible that since the negative reviews the manufacturer improved the electronics? But my new can, as of October 2023, is operating perfectly. Very happy with it. Feb, 2024, Update: Batteries last a long time. This can gets frequent daily use in the kitchen and I've changed the batteries twice since buying the can over three months ago, and not because the batteries were dead, but the lid begins to get sluggish. And I'm using AA-size Eneloop rechargeable batteries in C-size adapters (not real C size.) So less than half the amp hours of real C cells. Taking that into account, if you're using C-size alkalines, I'm guessing you could get close to three months, maybe more, from your batteries.

Good purchase
It’s a trash can. I’ve had it 10 months now, it’s normal sized for a kitchen trashcan, works well, my dog can open it but not get in it. I’ve been afraid the lid will break, but it hasn’t so it seems well made. Just now having to change the batteries in the lid for the first time, so I came to see how long I’ve had it. Not bad!

Great value!
I recently purchased an automatic trashcan for my kitchen, and I have to say, it has been a game-changer. This innovative device has completely transformed the way I manage and dispose of my household waste. First and foremost, the automatic feature of this trashcan is incredibly convenient. With just a wave of my hand or a simple foot pedal press, the lid opens automatically, allowing me to dispose of my trash without the need to touch the can. This hands-free operation is not only hygienic but also saves me time and effort, especially when my hands are full or dirty. The design of the trashcan is sleek and modern, seamlessly blending into my kitchen decor. The stainless steel construction gives it a sophisticated look, and the fingerprint-resistant coating ensures that it stays clean and shiny. The size of the trashcan is perfect for my needs, providing ample capacity for my household waste without taking up too much space. One of the standout features of this automatic trashcan is its odor control system. The lid has a tight seal that effectively traps unpleasant odors inside, keeping my kitchen smelling fresh and clean. Additionally, the trashcan comes with a removable and washable liner that makes it easy to keep the inside of the can clean and odor-free. Another aspect that I appreciate is the trashcan's smart sensor technology. It detects when I approach or move away from it, automatically opening and closing the lid accordingly. This not only adds to the convenience but also helps conserve energy by minimizing unnecessary lid openings. Cleaning and maintaining the trashcan is a breeze. The removable lid and liner make it easy to empty and clean the can when needed. The durable construction ensures that the trashcan withstands regular use without any issues. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my automatic trashcan. It combines functionality, convenience, and style in one package. It has simplified my waste management routine and made it more hygienic. If you're looking for a hassle-free and efficient way to handle your household trash, I highly recommend investing in an automatic trashcan.

I'm giving this product a poor review for 3 reasons
I'm giving this product a poor review for 3 reasons. 1. Operation - The lid only sometimes opens when you wave your hand over it. When it does, it opens half-way and it doesn't always close. 2. Construction - The manual open/close buttons cracked within 6 months. See photo where we put tape over the broken buttons. 3. Warranty - The warranty is disingenuous, introducing obstacles in an effort to get you to go away. After about 9 months, it started failing where the lid either wouldn't open or, if it did, would only open half-way. Then it was hit or miss whether it would close. I tried changing the batteries, turning it off and back on again. When I contacted the company about replacing the lid, I was told to give it a hard reset by taking out the batteries and leaving them out for 24 hours. What exactly is this supposed to accomplish? I could take the batteries out for 24 seconds and achieve the same result. Suffice to say, I did as instructed and much to my surprise...absolutely nothing changed. It still didn't work right...same problems as before. I contacted customer service again and they told me to mail the broken lid back and they would take a look at it, run it through a bunch of tests, etc. This tact is obviously just an obstacle to get the customer to go away knowing that the retail postage cost is prohibitive. Instead of paying to ship a broken lid across the country, I could just buy a new garbage can. I've decided not to mail the broken lid back because I'm not going to invest any more money into this garbage can or this company. This is the second garbage can I have owned from Ninestars. The first one broke, too, in the same exact ways. Based on my experiences and multiple reviews by other Ninestar owners, this company makes shoddy products that should be avoided.
