The companion book to COURSERA®'s wildly popular massive open online course "Learning How to Learn" Whether you are a student struggling to fulfill a math or science requirement, or you are embarking on a career change that requires a new skill set, A Mind for Numbers offers the tools you need to get a better grasp of that intimidating material. Engineering professor Barbara Oakley knows firsthand how it feels to struggle with math. She flunked her way through high school math and science courses, before enlisting in the army immediately after graduation. When she saw how her lack of mathematical and technical savvy severely limited her options—both to rise in the military and to explore other careers—she returned to school with a newfound determination to re-tool her brain to master the very subjects that had given her so much trouble throughout her entire life. In A Mind for Numbers , Dr. Oakley lets us in on the secrets to learning effectively—secrets that even dedicated and successful students wish they’d known earlier. Contrary to popular belief, math requires creative, as well as analytical, thinking. Most people think that there’s only one way to do a problem, when in actuality, there are often a number of different solutions—you just need the creativity to see them. For example, there are more than three hundred different known proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. In short, studying a problem in a laser-focused way until you reach a solution is not an effective way to learn. Rather, it involves taking the time to step away from a problem and allow the more relaxed and creative part of the brain to take over. The learning strategies in this book apply not only to math and science, but to any subject in which we struggle. We all have what it takes to excel in areas that don't seem to come naturally to us at first, and learning them does not have to be as painful as we might think. Good
Good book overall, I liked the first half. Not sure if I am the only one but 2nd half looks more like bunch of anecdotes about people. There are good strategies and summary is especially helpful.

Vivid and expressed beautifully, Must read
The book is not only applicable to maths and science but also to other aspects of life. It includes tips on habits , procastination, memory, and above all learning. It's a must read for high schoolers and college buds. According to author it can be applied to professional levels too. The use of words in this book is beautiful and is written as a friend not as a sacred piece that has all formal words. Use of creativity is quite often. Not a must buy but if you want to read something related to learning . This is a great pick. All the best for your read! 🌏🌏

A useful book
Although I read many self improvement book but I can rarely apply all the ideas of that book but this book present ideas in a doable way. I noticed how I highlighted my notes and books and after I read a particular line of this book I minimised my highlights. It present logical reasoning to many of the points and it would be a good books for students preparing for competitive exam. But I had some problems not particularly from the book but some contrasting ideas, and the author talked about how she was influenced by Cal Newport ,she tells us to use pomodoro but cal idea of deep work with extended time contrasts it’s ideas. But over all the book was helpful

Importante ferramenta de melhorar as técnicas de aprendizado
Acredito que conheci o livro pelo mesmo modo que a maioria, que foi através do curso "Learning How To Learn" no Coursera.

Great!
This book is wonderful. A lot of techniques, a lot of explanations and analogies easy to understand, a lot of inspiriting words... I wish I had a book like this one earlier, when I was a student 20 years ago! I would have mastered high school and college! Easily!

A well structured guide to learning
In A Mind For Numbers, Barbara Oakley has compiled an extensive guide to effective study habits. The science behind the recommendations is communicated exceptionally well through the use of simplification and analogy. The practical advice is easy to implement in one's own study. I liked that Barbara identifies the flaws in conventional study habits, such as passive rereading, which has given me confidence to depart from those habits in my own study, in order to adopt the recommendations in the book. The book is also motivating. It has many accounts of students who have struggled in different areas of study, and have overcome their struggles by re-learning how to learn, in particular Barbara's own story. I am recommending this book to anyone who will listen!
