At Home in Mitford: A Novel

An amazing , heartfelt, lovable, series that takes me back to another time with all the wit, wisdom and fun that life once was. I'm 72 years old and ready to start the series again. I first read this 10 years ago and still think back to the story and the characters. The well developed characters of Mitford make this story and I'm eager to begin the story again.

Father Tim and the people of Mitford are so refreshing and engaging, that they make me want to move to a small village near some mountains. The story was engaging from the start, watching the hero of the book find companionship and a way to get healthy and whole. It's a love story, for sure, but not just a romance; the love that flows from the Holy Spirit through Father Tim affects the whole town in a positive way. Jesus is so real in these pages, and when one of the townsfolk took sick, I found myself praying for them! LOL I'd recommend this for young adults all the way up to senior adults. It's a simple read, but the more mature reader will get just as much out of the story as the young.

Did not realize that it was a play, with music in between. Americana, small town with predictable characters, a bit of religion in it. Characters and story draws you on. I would recommend. A bit pricey fo an audio cd.

Delightful reading, depth of soul content and from mind of a delightful writer. The breadth of God's merciful grace greatly expressed on a heartwarming story tale.

At Home in Mitford is the first story in Jan Karon’s precious 15 book Mitford series. My Mitford story reviews will be general in scope. The Mitford stories include so much heartwarming treasure for the reader… it would be difficult to highlight certain passages. The series is set in a small hamlet in the mystical Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. For those who have not lived in that area, the ancient Blue Ridge Mountains have always been mystical. Our main character is 60-year-old Episcopal Father Timothy Kavanagh. He knows exactly how to care for his flock… and his flock is an eclectic assemblage. Among them, the church secretary Emma Garrett, 11-year-old Dooley Barlow who finds a calm home with Father Tim, a German mastiff named Barnabas who doesn’t follows commands… but heels to Bible verses, Father Tim’s housemaid Puny Bradshaw… an angel disguised as a young lady who needed work, and the new lady next door Cynthia Coppersmith. Beware Tim, the girl next door is a real thing!I’m just beginning this series, but the first book has been glorious! I love the setting, the characters, and the storyline. Plus, there are beautiful Bible verses woven throughout the story that touch your heart and make the story more enduring. Rating: 5 STARS!

This book truly filled my heart with some much warmth, I laughed, I almost cried, I was simply in awe. Great read!

This is the first book in The Mitford Series about a smal town in the North Carolina mountains. Father Tim’s the main character with a cast of dozen others who will become your best friends in time. I have reread the entire series several times through the years, especially when I need to be uplifted and life has thrown me some hardballs. I often give this book as a present, and others now u sets tans and feel the same way about Jan Karon’s wonderful, inspiring books. Happy Reading.P.s. I was at a Litttle Leaque game one day talking to another woman about books. Because of my high praise she bought the first three books. When she told me I felt nervous, because turns out she was a book editor and that was a leaf of faith to buy three. She said the first book was a bit slow getting into it, but suddenly she was hooked and absolutely loved them. High praise.

Just received this novel and am excited to read it. Upon opening it, I discovered pages 175 to 206 damaged. They were folded into the book. When I unfolded them, I discovered the pages weren't cut correctly. They are larger and jagged, and it appears that this was known but just dealt with by folding the excess into the book.I still plan to read the novel and when I do, I will come back to leave a review about the actual work itself.

beautiful story and God’s presence

This is the second time I've read this first installment in the Mitford Series. Enjoyed it very much again. Heartwarming. Brings me back to what is really important in this life. I recommend this book (and the whole series) to anyone who would like to read a story about kindness, caring for others, and friendship. A wonderful reminder of the goodness that God put in people and is often lacking in the world we live in today.

Someone gave me this, and I didn't know what to expect.7 books later (and I've just completed the series) it's almost become part of life to read a bit every night.Yes, it's fiction, but so much of it rings through.And it's not saccharine sweet - there's a lot of funny, awful, gritty real-life stuff in here.Now the whole series is on my shelves and I'm very grateful to the lady who gave us the first book and said "try this - I think you might like it".

Having read nearly all of Jan Karon's novels, I had never been able to get a good copy of the first in the series. I was delighted to find a brand new copy of the book and was a pleasure to read.

Great book, enjoyed reading it.
