The Celtic Design Book

Fabulous book for getting information on Celtic design and wonderful step by step instructions for creating your own designs. Purchased book to add to calligraphy library. Very happy with this. I thought this book was going to be more like a color book and I would have to copy designs but this is for making your own. It is actually a 2 volume book in one so I was really surprised when it arrived.

Great book with not only a step-by-step instructions but also explaining all the meta things you need to understand to be able to do celtic design.

As far as I'm concerned this is not a book for beginners. It is probably the best book on the market right now for drawing Celtic designs and knot work but Mr. Meehan assumes you know a lot more than the targeted audience. I bought this book perhaps 2 years into my study of knot work because it was hailed as the best book for beginners. Two days later I closed it and never looked at it again. I was completely frustrated until I did further research on the internet and learned how to draw from Sheila Sturrow's book. Still, Sheila's book is labor intensive. More so than is actually needed. One must study break lines - this is key to learning the art of Celtic knot work. Until you know how to manipulate the basic 3x2 and 3x3 (grid) knots with break lines, I would recommend holding off on the purchase of this book and go with the many free tutorials online. Pick the style that suits you best and learn as much as you can about it. Again, once you understand the basics of break lines, this book will then become the . book it's hailed to be for "beginners". Furthermore, whatever you do, do not "cheapen this ancient art work with a computer program that does the knots for you. They do not look like the ones our ancient ancestors handed down to us over the centuries and melleniums. Keep in mind that these ancients did not have a computer. They had a stone and a piece of rock to etch the design into a larger stone (see real Celtic crosses, not "drawings" of Celtic crosses. Preserve the art and do it by hand. If it looks better, it is better. Computer programs are too uniform in shape and knots. They give the impression of being a stamped cut out. Preserve the tradition of the Picts and Celts. Dont be afraid to make that are not perfect the first couple of rounds. Just be patient. It's as the old adage goes: "All good things come to those who wait and learn break lines before buying the Aiden Meehan. Once at this stage, his book is truly for you

A great book on the design meaning and history of Celtic design, great range of designs and the how to, is fantastic.

My friends and I have been working on a story project (including multiple hand-drawn pictures with the characters and their surroundings) that involves the Celtic pattern, and we weren't able to figure out the drawing process of these beautiful artwork until the moment we received this book. Although meant to be an introduction to the Celtic pattern, the book also offers a great tutorial on how to draw the patterns step by step as well.

I like the clear, simple wasy it is written and illustrated. I was concerned about the fact that the book actually was three books in one, and might be cumbersome to work with. It is not. It is designed to be able to lay flat on the table while working with the patterns and instructions. I highly recommend this book fo ranyone who is interested in Celtic design and knotwork.

Received the book yesterday. I thought I had been sent the wrong book! The current book has a completely different cover. Glancing through, it looks to be a good instruction book for someone who is at the beginner/intermediate level. May change review once I've done some actual work with the book.

If you need any Celtic design, or maybe even some inspiration, tips, ways to move your pen, geometry of the knots, this is the book. Great pictures with better explanations. If you are the fence about buying it I hope this review entices you. I reference all the time especially when I need to construct a parallel argument with different art from that era.

I often work on celtic inspired designs related to the irish dance school in my country. I had to make logos, graphic presentations, designs of embroydery on dresses! I was looking for some solid reference to help me better this activity, I had another book that was not useful, but this was a delight to study and I managed to understand some things better. It has both an appealing content - nice examples, pleasant thematic font, the page formating makes it easy to grasp and follow - and instructional chapters to follow, even for fun.

Bought this book as a gift for a friend of mine who uses it regularly to learn the art of Celtic design. She finds it informative and a pleasure to use, so all good!

Bel libro. Racchiude i 3 libri o volumetti vendibili separatamente. Quindi parla delle lettere miniate, dei nodi celtici e del design celtico. Lo consiglio vivamente anche se per i nodi celtici consiglio altra metodologia ("quello delle dita incrociate"). Per il resto è un libro valido, non a caso il signor Aidan Meehan ha tutta una lista di libri che ha pubblicato in merito, ergo non è un improvvisato. Lo consiglio!
