'The Grand Design', by eminent scientist Stephen Hawking, is the latest blockbusting contribution to the so-called New Atheist debate, and claims that the laws of physics themselves brought the Universe into being, rather than God. In this swift and forthright reply, John Lennox, Oxford mathematician and author of 'God's Undertaker', exposes the flaws in Hawking's logic. In lively, layman's terms, Lennox guides us through the key points in Hawking's arguments - with clear explanations of the latest scientific and philosophical methods and theories - and demonstrates that far from disproving a Creator God, they make his existence seem all the more probable. Review: Perfect rebuttal, completely crushes hawking's "theory" - This book is a fantastic and a complete rebuttal of hawking's theory of "infinite, alternate universes" (which are of course "undetectable") proposed by a man who desperately needs to deal with the mathematical odds on how life began. The odds are so impossible that life could have begun from inanimate chemicals here in *this* universe that hawking has concluded that there must be infinite, undetectable alternate universes, which of course, increase the probability resources necessary for what he wishes to be true. John Lennox dashes these hopes with *real* science, sorry hawking. And also sorry dawkins whose screeching has reached a crescendo, but it is just that: "screeching". No science, so: sorry dawkins as well. Very well done and very well written. Short and always to the point, John C. Lennox is fast becoming my new favorite author on this topic. Any of the curious should go and see John's debate videos on youtube, he leaves no doubt and I do enjoy his Irish accent and sweet demeanor. Review: Really Smart People? - I was in the process of reading God's Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? by John Lennox, when I saw this little 96 page book available for download. Having just received a Kindle for Christmas, I figure "What the heck, why not download a quick read for practice?" Wow! Suffice it to say that I am now a complete fan of John Lennox. For starters, with a John Lennox book, it quickly becomes obvious that every single sentence and paragraph has been carefully thought through and constructed. He shoots with both barrels loaded, but he is sooo cool about it. In a world where it is easy to get intimidated by Officially Really Smart People, John takes on all comers. But Stephen Hawking? We're talking about the Einstein of our age! No problem for Lennox. John Lennox doesn't dispute the intelligence of Mr. Hawking, nor does he question Hawking's integrity as a great thinker. He sure does punch wide, gaping holes in Mr. Hawking's philosophical underpinning, though. And yes, Lennox rightly points out how Mr. Hawking dabbles into the world of philosophy and theology, even though Hawking denies his intention to do so. When Stephen Hawing meets John Lennox, it's like the former bringing a knife to a gunfight with the later. Ego versus intellect, it's no match. I would love to see a Hawking response to this book, but I don't think that's going to happen. Hawking can't win.

Short Rebut of Hawking
McGrath calls this book: "A brilliant response to the 'Grand Design.'" It's only 90 small pages but is loaded with great insights and critical thinking--that which Hawking is really weak. John Lennox (MA PhD, DPhil, DSc; professor Mathematics Oxford) discusses Multi-universes, laws of nature, and rationality in a very easy to understand way. Most high school kids could understand much of this and he makes a great case for the existence of God. Lennox not only wins many public debates, he is a wonderful writer. get this work -it's inexpensive, short and very convincing. give it to an atheist friend, since it is short and doesn't cost much, it is easy to give away. also see The Science of God: The Convergence of Scientific and Biblical Wisdom or Truth, Knowledge and the Reason for God: The Defense of the Rational Assurance of Christianity

Wonderful rebuttal to Stephen Hawking's Theory of Everything
Stephen Hawking came up with his theory of everything as an attempt to explain how the universe and life exist apart from the existence of a Creator. In his book, The Grand Design, Hawking states that, while the universe's extreme fine-tuning would suggest that there was a Grand Designer, there was none. Instead, to explain the improbability of the random existence of our universe, he theorized the existence of an almost infinite number of universes and that everything came into being from nothing because of the existence of gravity. John Lennox, a Christian professor at Oxford University, has written this concise, readable, crisp response. It's an excellent little book. Every high school junior and senior and college student should read this! It quickly reveals the fallacies of Mr Hawking's theory and cites many in the scientific community who contend that Mr Hawking's position is not supported by science. Professor Lennox then reasserts the Christian position of an infinite God as Creator as a superior position to Mr. Hawking's.

The "Grand Design" has no clothes
John Lennox. professor of mathematics at Oxford College, responds to Stephen Hawking's “The Grand Design”. Dr. Lennox’s response to the “The Grand Design” strikes at the very foundations of Hawking’s ideas. Lennox puts forth the following points reducing Hawking’s latest book to insignificance. 1. After declaring that philosophy is dead (and science will explain all), Hawking begins to posit philosophical statements thus contradicting himself right in the beginning of the book. 2. After displaying an inadequate view of philosophy, Hawking displays an inadequate view of God. That is, he shows the foolishness of the old Greek mythological gods but never interacts with the God of the Bible. 3. Hawking states, “ Because of the law of gravity, the universe creates itself out of nothing.” Lennox writes “Hawking appears therefore to be simultaneously asserting than the universe is created from nothing and from something - not a very promising start.” Indeed for something to create itself is nonsense. 4. Hawking misunderstands the nature of physical laws. These physical laws (and theories) describe the regularities found in nature. To quote Lennox again, “... the theories and laws cannot even cause anything, let alone create it.” He then illustrates this by saying that Newton’s law’s of motion do not cause billiard balls to race across the table. 5. Hawking states that the M-Theory (string theory) and the multiverse explain the coming from nothing. Indeed in these theories, whatever universes can exist, do exist. This leads to bizarre conclusions. These theories are not verifiable or falsifiable and therefore can the even be considered science? With these 5 fundamental points, not much is left of Hawking’s book. To quote Lennox again, “.... nonsense remains nonsense, even when talked by world-famous scientists.” “God and Stephens Hawking” is a short book of less than 100 pages and relatively small in size. Lennox gets right to his points and is relatively concise to this book will not be a burden to read. If you want a more in-depth (but readable) critique of M-Theory, check out “Big Bang Big God” by R. Holder.

Short and Clear
Dr Lennox clearly lays out the atheistic position taken by Steven Hawking which is that because of the law of gravity the Universe can and did create itself. This is a short and concise refutation of Hawking’s position. Dr Lennox also shows that the belief in God has always been the main force behind science. And, by pointing out the many great scientists of the past, like Newton, believed in God and that many today still believe, like Physicist John Polkinghorn. This is well worth reading.

Superb
I was at first scared to purchase this book out of a fear that John Lennox could not stand up to Stephen Hawking. I was pleasantly surprised. The entire time I was reading I tried to poke holes in John Lennox's arguments. I couldn't. I even read the one star reviews looking for holes in his arguments. I could not find any. The only reason there are one star reviews is because dogmatic atheists for the first time have had their beliefs challenged and they could not refute. It still shocks me how Christians are accused of blind faith when atheism is the embodiment of it. Excellent book if you are an atheist who has an open mind. Excellent book if you are a Christian and want to know how to defend your faith. Top-notch scholarly work. Wish everyone could read it and make an informed decision about eternity.

Well Worth Reading!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was logical and concise, and did a wonderful job of refuting the idea that science has disproved the existence of God. This book clearly articulates a side of the argument that is often suppressed in our universities. Well done, John Lennox! I especially recommend this book to agnostics and to anyone who wishes to gain a solid understanding of the reasons why science does not and cannot disprove the existence of God. If anyone who has read it would like more information on the historical evidence for the Resurrection, which this book touches on but does not develop, I recommend, "More Than A Carpenter" by Josh McDowell as a starting point.

John Lennox simply destroys Hawking's atheism
Professor John C Lennox destroys Hawking's overreaching scientific reductionism and demonstrates that the existence of God is not just probable but necessary to explain a fine tuned universe.

Interessante, critica inteligente
Muito interessante o ponto abordado. Uma voz sensata e preparada, vai na jugular - como assim S. H diz " Filosofia não é mais necessária". Como alguém genial e famoso pode entrar nesse nível de arrogância? Gênios não são gênios em tudo. E vale ler

Kudos John Lennox! Good work.
Focussed and pointed arguments. The book does not waste time and gets straight to the core of the theme. The author simple yet powerful analogies that a layman can easily understand. I recommend this to all truth seekers and suggest not to see things through Hawking's eyes but your own.
