Excellent economy-priced espresso machine
I researched a few different espresso machines in the price range of $30-$40 before purchasing. This one seemed to have the quality and function at a low price point. I would agree. My husband and I have been using this product since it arrived around the 3rd week of July. We make at least 2 sets four-shot espressos each morning for our morning coffee. This product has replaced our Bialetti stovetop espresso machine. It makes 4 shots in about 3 minutes, and steams the milk halfway through this brewing. Or not, you don't have to steam the milk if you don't want. Just let out the pressure on the steaming wand for a few seconds so there isn't buildup. It's incredibly easy to use, easy to clean, and does it job. I will update this review if and when there are any concerns or problems. Otherwise, if there's no updates consider it's still doing it's job. Bottom line = great espresso machine at a low price point! Makes a great tasting espresso, and steams the milk well too. I did take off the plastic part at the bottom so there isn't milk with hot plastic just sitting in it and it's easier to clean.

DeLonghi Has Made Great Improvements!
We purchased our first DeLonghi espresso/cappuccino maker over 15 years ago. Granted, we only used it a couple times a month (not every day), but it really lasted and worked great. It finally broke this fall so I purchased this new model for my husband as a Christmas gift. Right away we noticed the improvements in the design, power of the machine and ease of use. My only disappointment was that the unit did NOT come with a frothing pitcher - I had to order one separately. I read some of the reviews here that suggested I buy a short/squat shaped pitcher due to a shorter-than-usual steaming arm. I bought the shortest one I could find but was disappointed that the arm did not reach to the bottom of the small pitcher. HOWEVER... we quickly realized that we didn't need to touch the bottom of the pitcher while frothing/steaming - the power of this unit heats the milk effectively without having to dip all the way down like we needed to with the older unit. I would highly recommend this model for home users who want great-tasting, good quality espresso without paying the high cost of some of the other bigger-name models. DeLonghi has stood our test of time and has continued to improve their products - a wonderful surprise!

Good Machine, Needs to be Taller Though
I got this machine because it was fairly inexpensive and it had decent reviews. It does make good espresso, haven't tried it for cappuccino yet, and I haven't been able to steam the milk for my latte's as by the time I get my cup out and the milk into it the machine's done, but we're working on it. My main gripe is that when the espresso spout is hooked up, it's to big for a regular cup to fit under there. Yes, I could just buy a set of tiny espresso cups, but if I'm making a latte, I need a larger cup, especially when I'm putting double shots in (or on a day when I need more, 4 shots) and those cups don't fit under the spout without tipping the cup. If you tip the cup then you have to tip it to get it back out and then the espresso spills. I do like that it's so easy to use, that it comes with the little pre-measured pot (which is cute, if it wasn't glass I'd let my toddler play coffee maker with it), and all you have to do is push the button on the side. The machine is quick and quiet and easy to clean thanks to the removable tray. Just needs an adjustable spout and it would be perfect.

Please Don't waste your money!
I should have paid attention to the other bad reviews! I think that the people that left 5 stars must have gotten a different machine than me. I've had at least 8 espresso machines in the last 20 years, know how to use them, have only needed new ones when they burn out or stop getting hot quick enough. This one is just a nightmare! 1-Takes forever to get an espresso. Stops half way through and I have to let steam out of the frother or it won't finish making the espresso. I have NO idea why. I've waited 20 minutes just to test it, nope, as soon as I let a little steam out it continued. 2-The fact that you can't cut off the espresso to steam makes both just run weak and can ruin the milk froth and the espresso crema. Ends up like you're just dripping coffee. 3- The stupid safety seal is such a pain! Have to wait for it to totally cool down to remove the top, often doesn't seal right no matter how careful you are, have to wait again. 4-Don't expect to make espresso for more than 4 people, just takes too long. This thing has annoyed the heck out of me. Espresso shouldn't be this hard! I've had Mr. Coffee's that were soooo much better than this thing. I waited a year for this review hoping I would get use to it. I wish I had returned it! I trashed it this week. Waste of money.

BEST. $40. SPENT. EVER.
LOVE THIS MACHINE!!!!!!!!! I used to be a Starbucks latte drinker and my venti would cost 4.89 plus 1.00 tip. I used to do this 1-2x daily!!! I am not a huge fan of coffee perse, so I always was into the super sweet concoctions with lots of espresso. My husband was also good for 2-3 starbucks dbl shots/day. We figured we were spending easily 110.00/week (almost 500.00/month!!!). Now I buy the starbucks syrup and beans and make all of our drinks from home. This little, inexpensive machine is AWESOME. So easy to use, sturdy, and quick. I have used machines before but my husband (who cant use a manual can opener, to be noted) only took two tries to master it. VERY USER FRIENDLY :o)He makes his own every morning. The frothing wand works well and Ive had no problems. Im actually shocked at some of the reviews and am going to blame individual machine malfunction or operator error. Im writing this review because Im online ordering one for a friend. GREAT BUY!!! This machine will pay for itself in 8 drinks and save you money while you enjoy it!!

It stopped working suddenly:(
Getting this machine was my idea, my husband was happy with our leaking, overflowing Mr. Coffee coffee maker. I finally took the plug and we are both glad we did. Now, we have had this for only a week, so I can't comment on longevity. I will update as needed. So far we have found it easy to use (we read through the directions the first time we made expresso) and it makes a good cup of joe. The instructions suggest making two cups of coffee before you actually drink what you made so I did that. My husband wishes it made an 8 cup of java juice but that would defeat the purpose:) We use the same coffee as before (Caribou Mahogany) and it is very flavorful. The steamer works well with our coffee mug and whole milk. It is nice because we steam the milk right in the mug, pour the coffee in and have a very hot, yummy cup. Alone the coffee is not that hot but we always add seamed milk which brings up the temp significantly. Ok, we loved this machine while it worked. We brewed 2-4 cups a day for 4 months. Then one morning it just wouldn't heat up anymore. It appears that the heating element died. Ugh, now we paid money for something that doesn't work. It sucks!

DeLonghi EC5 Steam-Driven 4-cup Espresso and coffee Maker. Black
The Espresso machine arrived without an instruction manual. This was not made known prior to my purchase. It was listed that it had been opened up, from box, and not used. I received it with writing on top of box, that the user manual was missing...Great, but no problem. I have been making latte's for 20 years. This product is attractive on the counter. However, one of the most difficult machines, I have worked with. It has taken me weeks to get it figured out. It is misleading, regarding the amount of coffee/espresso that it disperses with regard to it brewing and being enough for 2 lattes, by the picture on the box.. Espresso perhaps would be fine.. I didn't attempt that. It will make a good strong single brewed serving, for one latte. The placement of the frothing spout is also awkward to use, given the position of it. Should have been farther from the area where the coffee is coming out. Therefore you get blow back,on your hands and the machine, while trying to steam the milk/creamer. I'm sure a user manual would have clarified the operational use better, then my attempt each time to decide how much water should be used each time. After several weeks of daily use, testing and being upset, I have figured this out. If it is not precisely measured, you will either not get enough coffee brewed, or it over flows the brewing pot. The steamed milk will also be either over heated and no foam, or under frothed, and no foam...Once that is figured out, It will make a good latte. I would not replace it with the same model number EC5 again, after experiencing this knowledge. Starting out your mornings with the complicated use of this machine, is more then I would want each morning. Plan on cleaning a mess daily, after using it. It however is not that bad, once you get it calibrated. However that being said, it does make a great brew, after you get it all down to a science.... Haha.Good luck! it is worth it, for the money,if you have the patience to play with it. One other thing that is complicated, is to know when to turn off machine..before the brew is done ..or during the brew and when to start the steaming of the milk.Again a user manual would have eliminated most of this confusion. Also you must be experience in frothing the milk or forget it...It will not come out right. Tomorrow is a new day, I am hoping I finally have this down to a science and the brew will be great!

Using for 5 years and love it, bought a second for the office
I love this little machine! I purchased the first one in 2004 after reading excellent reviews on the "crema" quality. We've used this machine everyday for the last 5 years and look forward to it every morning. I'm an Americano drinker and have found the way to get the strongest, smoothest flavor from this machine is to pull a double shot, then add half an inch of boiling water, then cream. Delicious! Here in Seattle, I use local Lighthouse Roasters or Longbeach Roasters coffee beans at home. The freshness of these high quality coffees makes our home espresso drinks as good as we'd get at a cafe. The second machine I just bought today is for the office, where I've been spending way too much money running to the corner cafe for coffee in the afternoon. Since I purchased our first machine 5 years ago, the price of this unit has dropped by half (I paid $65 for the first one). I'm hoping the popularity of the machine has allowed DeLonghi to drop the price and not the quality. Side Note: I have never used the frothing wand on this machine and have heard the milk steaming/frothing capacity is low. The steam pressure, in relation to coffee quality, creates the most flavorful shots the first 2 runs. Give the machine a break of 10 minutes or so before turning on another steam cycle. For us at home, this is the amount of time it takes to drink our first cup, so the timing works out perfectly.

Great little unit
For the price and the size this little unit does the trick every morning. Probably made over 300 espressos since I've got it and still works perfectly. Cleanup is simple with the metal filter as well. Although the steamer attachment did break off a while ago, but it didn't bother me as I manually froth my milk anyways. But I'll admit it's not connected to the unit very strongly.

Full body espresso!
This machine makes great European style espresso! This is basically the difference between steam and pump driven machines. This is a steam driven machine that produces a full body coffee.
