Decent Study Guide; Easy To Understand
Very Good Study Guide...but after taking the CLEP Am. Lit. I have to say that much of the material on the test was NOT covered in this book. That being said, this book is a wonderful guide to learning and discovering American Literature. I really like the easy-to-understand format and the way this book breaks down all the time periods and places the authors in each particular time period. This makes the material easier to remember and the information is inclusive and detailed but not overly cumbersome. I found the practice tests to be basically irrelevant to the actual scored test. I scored super high on the practice tests but struggled with many questions on the actual exam b/c it was material that had not been covered. I do think that the authors of these test books do the very best they can to prepare the student...from that point it is the student's responsibility to grow, learn more, and make smart choices on questions that may not have been covered. I did use additional study materials and I studied very hard and really prepared for this exam. I did pass but would have liked to have gotten 100%...but alas! I would recommend this book but I would supplement with other materials in preparation. Good Luck!!

Good information, not exhaustive
This book was a good resource in preparation for the CLEP test. However, I would not rely on this alone to pass. I read this book once and used Study.com extensively and got a 61. Most of the questions pertained more toward interpretation rather than history so did not feel fully prepared by either resource for the test. I passed anyway so that is good enough for me.

Good Study Guideline
I have just taken the CLEP American Literature exam and I scored at 50. I only studied what was in this book and then read a few books such as The Scarlett Letter and The Old Man and the Sea. This book is great for a general outline of authors and genres. I studied more into the authors and the exam I took was heavy on understanding poems so I recommend adding poems into your studying as well. I studied for about a month before the exam but I think if I had two months I would have had more time to read more into the books and poetry.Overall good study guide!

Good overall study guide, but read the actual texts too!
This is a good book to help you study for the CLEP test, and the practice questions are very helpful. HOWEVER, you will really need to read the primary source material mentioned in the book, or there is no way you will pass your test. I was able to read this study guide, plus supplement with a Norton Anthology I checked out from my local library, and I did fine. But make sure you read the literature marked as Must-Read in this guide!

I would recommend also reading plot summaries of the major novels
Using this book I was able to pass the CLEP test with a decent score. I would recommend also reading plot summaries of the major novels, which you can do on Sparknotes. Being familiar with the characters and themes in important works served me well.
