A hiking boot silhouette is given a boost of Dr. Martens personality. Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

JakeMartinekEngl 302Dr. Martens โNeilโ bootsI purchased the Dr. Martens โNeilโ style boots about one year ago. So far I am very impressed because I was looking for a pair of comfortable everyday boots that would last me for a long period of time. I have always heard that Dr. Martens makes a good boot and I have never had a pair before now. I am glad that I spent the extra money to get the name brand boots because so far they are up holding the good rumors about them. During the fall and into the winter months I typically wear these boots daily and they have never let me down.If you are a person who is looking for a good looking pair of leather boots that will last for many years, the Dr. Martens โNeilโ is for sure a pair that you should consider. These boots would also be a good choice if your are into walking on trails because they have a very good grip pattern on the bottom that will allow for optimal traction while walking on a dirt path. If you are someone who works outside all day and donโt mind scuffing up the leather on your boots these would also be a great choice because you will be comfortable standing in these all day.The criteria that I used to judge these boots was the overall comfort; the durability, the quality of the leather, warmth and water resistance. I chose to grade the boots in these areas because these are some of the main things that you would have to deal with on a daily basis.ComfortIn the category of comfort I would say that these boots score five stars. The first time that you wear them you will think that they have already been broken in. You will notice that after walking in them for awhile because no hot spots will develop on your feet like some other boots. These boots have the Dr. Martens โAirWairโ soles because of this you will notice at the end of the day your feet shouldnโt be sore.DurabilityThese boots should last your for quite some time, they are built to last. After wearing them for a year there is nothing going wrong with them. The soles still have great grip and all of the stitching has held up.Leather QualityThe leather seems to be high quality it has not cracked. It soft and doesnโt get stiff in the cold temperatures. The leather also holds it shape very well and the overall color of the leather has held up perfectly.WarmthThe warmth of these boots isnโt that great because they donโt have any insulation in them. They do have enough room to fit your feet I with a nice pair of thermal socks.Water ResistanceThe water resistance is great on these boots. Whenever I have worn these boots in the snow or when it is raining my feet have never gotten wet.The negatives for these boots would be that they do scuff easily and because they are leather you do have to apply leather conditioner every now again. So if you are in search of a good pair of boot I would highly recommend the Dr. Martens โneilโ

The boot was a little wider in the ankle than last years boot style. Once you lace them up DM style they are pretty good. The heel is really nice and soft when walking. They are not a real tight fit like other DM are, so easy to break them in I recommend spray waterproof scotch guard.....or something, I usually put 3 coats of spray on boots before I start using them.

UPDATE - 1 year life - Quality Concerns & Poor Trends
Update! I was initially very happy with my Doc Marten Niel boots, so I picked up another 2 pair on b1g1 sale on another site. My first pair lasted almost a year, but the sole started coming apart at the toe at about 6-7 months. Soon after, snow or rain would get in and my toes froze at winter temps due to the gap left in the toe sole. I contacted customer service and they wanted pics and a copy of my receipt! I never did follow-up with them and just chucked the boots and rotated in a new pair. Same exact issues after 6 months of wear. This points to quality control and cheap glue used in the soles, which is a huge bummer. I'm off to contact customer service again, but fair warning - Dr Martens are not the "boots for life" kind of manufacturer they used to be.First off, I wear a US size 10.5 to 11 depending on shoe manufacturer. I ordered a UK 9 and they fit perfectly. I can wear either thick or thin socks and no problems. I put that first because I searched high and low for size information and found conflicting reports everywhere. The quality is no different in this made in China boot than the made in the UK boots I had 20 yrs ago! The tan Greenland is a really nice looking boot and unlike many other Docs, has a nice padded upper, which really makes a huge difference in ankle/shin comfort when you lace these guys up tight. No circulation issues, no discomfort. They felt broken in right out of the box, and I haven't taken them off except to sleep since I got them! Couldn't be happier with these boots. The leather is soft and scuffs nicely without lookin like they're ruined the first thing you come in contact with. They look and feel like they'll take some serious abuse and last a good long time. My only qualm with them is that since they're made in China, you'd think the price would go down a bit...I guess you're buying the name either way. Still worth it.

Dr. Marten sizes
There is no fractions, it's either an 8 or a 9, what about 8.5 ??? it fits ok and the boot is great, but not being the same size exactly and having this empty space in the shoe ruined the whole concept of Dr. Martens boot. Hope you start taking this matter more serious

Great boots!
I was under the impression that I'd have to return them, believing that they wouldn't fit or even worse, I wouldn't like the looks of them at all. I could not be so wrong, they are stylish, look solid and durable all around and best of all, they fit my feet as a glove. They are not that heavy, considering that I despise heavy shoes. I totally recommend these boots!

Great boot!
I wasn't really liking how black and clean the boots looked upon arrival, but the leather wears nicely. The toe box seems to be an odd shape in my opinion as well, but they are extremely light and comfortable. They are a good boot to wear to a party and not look like you tried too hard to dress to impress, yet still look dapper.

Great looking shoe- a tad big
Love the design and feel. They run a little large in size for me, however going a size smaller might not do the trick in cold weather if I had to wear thicker socks. So I'm holding on to them.
