If so, what's recommended?** A: I built boxes for mine with 5/8” sheetrock so that my ceiling would maintain its fire rating. Made mine the width between trusses (about 22”) by 4’ by 7” deep. Sound great! They are designed for open airspace so the box needs to be big. Would definitely recommend a box for blow-in insulation. Especially if it’s cellulose blow-in. When painting, remember it is better to apply multiple very, very, very thin coats of paint and let them dry about 20-30 minutes in between coats. Otherwise, you will end up with one thick coat of paint that never dries completely= dry to touch but gummy and scratches easy. If your paint coat is too thick, then lightly sand to reduce the thickness and apply one final light coat of paint after sanding. The cover will go back in - it will be tighter because of the paint but will go back on. It may require to bend the edges inward just a little bit. I recommend to apply 2-3 small dabs about half a penny size of 100% clear silicone on the side the cover touches the speaker frame (apply to the frame not the covers). Don't put too much or it will be messy on your fingers as you guide the covers back on. The silicone will hold the cover in place after it dries. The covers sometimes fall with temperature changes without the help of silicone (it happened to me). Also, the silicone may help you to lube the edge and make easier the install of the cover. Have a rag ready to clean any excess. However, after I placed them in the ceiling, the bass response improved dramatically. It could be the 16 gauge speaker wire I used or it could be due to the ceiling enclosure acting as a reflex. No, they don't sound as good as the Mirage Omnican OC-65's they replaced, but they are much, much better the other cheap speakers I tried (Pyle and Vevor). They have a standard mounting mechanism for installation and removal (unlike the Vevors), and they actually sound pretty good (unlike the Pyles, which are horrible).Yes, these cost a little bit more, but they actually sound fine for casual listening. The CSic63's are decent, and the CSic83's (for not much more) are more than decent. They are actually pretty good! Bass response is way better than expected at this price, and most things sound fine at reasonable volume.If you are going to go to the trouble of running wires and cutting a hole in your ceiling, don't fill those holes with terrible speakers. Spend just a little more and get the CSic83's instead. Installation was simple. I am truly impressed with the sound quality out if these. I have four, two for side surrounds, and two for rear surrounds, off a Denon Avr-770. The sound quality and detail in the audio is excellent. Sure, a higher end speaker will be better quality, but at such a low price point compared to others, these are well worth trying. Don't expect big bass out of them, that's what subs and towers are for.
