Ironic Title for a Home-school Family!
As a mother who has taken the leap into homeschooling my children, I recently came across a book that made me chuckle with its title: "Everything You Need to Know Before You're 16 but Won't Get Taught in School." It’s funny because it perfectly captures the realities of the public education system, which often overlooks the practical skills our kids truly need to enter adulthood with confidence. My decision to withdraw my children from the public school system stemmed largely from safety concerns regarding my special needs children, but also from the understanding that traditional schools often miss the mark when it comes to teaching life skills. I have hated school even as a young child myself I never wanted to be there, felt it was a waste of time, and my biggest question in any class (if my parents could even get me to go that day) was always "How is this lesson going to help me in my adult life?" and often teachers did not like that question, because they had no valid examples on how the lessons they are forced to teach are going to really help anyone with their future. We had incorporated this book into our curriculum as part of our mental wellness and life skills lessons, and it has been a seamless addition! The interactive elements, pictures for visuals, and tons upon tons of exercises contained within this book made it an absolute joy to use! The QR code in the book for an additional workbook was awesome! Often when I am choosing books, I still have to create the lessons myself. I do not have to do that with these specific kinds of books and that is a HUGE bonus for me! My favorite part is that the practices outlined in the book are not just for kids or teenagers. As an adult, I have found some of the exercises to be helpful even for myself. There were a good few things within the book that we were able to discuss as our own strengths and weaknesses. It really makes you as a parent look at the areas you can stand to improve on as well when you're willing to be honest with yourself and the people around you. My daughters laughed every time I pointed to myself when talking about the things "we" need to improve on... I’ve noticed over the years at least at home, that a lot of arguments in our house stem from poor listening skills and assumptions that lead to negative feelings. This book addresses those issues head-on, which in turn helped us all start to improve on how we connect with one another. Taking a step back rather than jumping to conclusions or false assumptions, actively listening to what the other person is saying, and stepping outside of our own feelings to truly understand the other person is difficult for anyone. Practicing mindfulness is a skill that I have always felt to be extremely important. Having the tools to build that skill is a need for anyone to become a well rounded and emotionally stable adult! I highly recommend this book to other parents looking to equip their children with the skills they’ll truly need in life. So many of the lessons are a self reflection of who we are, and who we strive to be! Change always comes from within and working on ourselves is the most important first step in accomplishing anything!

We gave this to a family member for his 16th birthday. To our surprise, he has been sharing something new from the book with us every time he picks it up. If your teen gets tired of hearing advice from you, then this book is a great alternative. It's more than likely the same advice you would have given, but information that comes from a third party is often easier for teens to accept and take ownership of. This book does just that!
