Nice unit, really quiet and really good air flow on high for a hepa filter. The size is just right. It's been on for a month collecting lots of dust and no problems. The orange light comes on when I light a candle so I know it's working. The air smells better and I notice less dust. So far it's worked great. Opened the box, inserted the filter and turned it on. Easy enough.

This purifier makes a big difference in air quality. It’s powerful enough for a large room, runs quietly on the lower settings, and the auto mode adjusts the fan speed based on air quality. The filters are easy to replace, and the app support is a great bonus—I can check air quality and control the unit from my phone. After just a few days, I noticed less dust and fresher air. We've had one heck of a fire season this year--and if you live in the Western United States, I can already see you nodding your head in agreement. That's probably why you're here reading this review. Thank goodness for air purifiers. Chances are you've already looked at tons of them. You might even be confused as to which one to choose. Hopefully I can help you out with that.In essence, all an air purifier has to do is filter the air and expel it in better shape than it inhaled it. Most units (including the Winix unit here) do this by pulling the air through a HEPA filter--and that certainly helps. If all you're looking to do is reduce dust, you can stop here. Pick a filter, any filter. You'll get the job done.But why stop with one layer of filtration when this unit offers you four?When the air enters your Winix, it will first encounter a cleanable dust screen. This screen is much like what you may have in front of your computer case fans. Large particles get stuck here rather than in your HEPA filter, meaning you won’t have to replace the HEPA as often. In fact, Winix recommends replacing the HEPA once a year; you may have noticed that other brands recommend changing filters every three months or so. That’s why, and it serves as Layer One.The next layer is a honeycomb filter which is filled with activated carbon. You see, HEPA filters alone won't eliminate odors. Just like how activated carbon will remove odors from fish tanks when used as part of the tank's filtration, it also removes odors from the air. Pet dander, wildfire smoke, a certain someone’s love of gassy foods… yeah, you’ll like this function. That’s Layer Two.Layer Three is the HEPA filter itself. Small particles you may not be able to see--but will still do a number on your eyes and sinuses--get stopped in their tracks here.Layer Four is a negative-ion filter that Winix calls “Plasmawave.” Without over complicating the science behind it, this feature will make it harder for viruses to spread and will cause smaller particles to sink where they can be collected easier. This feature can be turned off if you don’t see the need for such thoroughness or perhaps you’re skeptical of the process, but I strongly suggest leaving it on.When it’s time to change (or clean, in the case of your dust screen) your filters, getting to them is easy. The entire front panel is held on by magnets (better than plastic tabs which can break over time). The filters themselves are easy to find right here on Amazon, and they are reasonably priced. You’ll be switched over in minutes. Your biggest hassle just might be tearing your new filters out of its packaging.Now let’s talk about features. For the vast majority of the people, simply hitting the “auto” button will work. This unit has an air quality sensor, and it will automatically increase its fan speed when it senses that your air quality has declined. Once air quality improves, it’ll slow down its fans. It’s a set-and-forget type of thing.For those who are more hands-on, you can bypass the auto mode and choose your own fan speed. This is useful if you’re running this unit in a room that needs more “reach,” or if you find the white noise of the fans to be soothing. On maximum speed, the unit is still quiet enough to hold a conversation next to it—a box fan is far, far louder. The filtered air is pushed upward, where it can more easily circulate in the room without diluting the denser polluted air it has yet to filter. This helps the purifier do a more efficient job.The air quality monitor lets you know what your room’s air quality is by showing you one of three colors: Blue means your air quality is good; Amber means it’s… well… mediocre; Red means bad. Pretty easy stuff, and easy to see from across the room. The various functions and features are backlit, so even in a dark room you won’t have any trouble selecting what you want. For those who are bothered by the indicator lights, there’s a night-time mode which turns them off.The unit itself is well thought-out and constructed. It doesn’t draw attention to itself, and will blend with most any decor. There’s no remote control that you’ll never use, and the controls are so well laid-out you’ll very likely never need to go digging around for the manual.My brother-in-law owns this unit, and it was on his recommendation that we ordered ours. We liked our first one so much, we quickly bought a second unit to go in our daughter’s bedroom. The difference has been striking. Now we only have to deal with wildfire smoke when we venture outside. The dry eyes and sniffles have reduced dramatically. Purifier works as expected, and does seem to clear the air up pretty easily and quickly. It does get pretty loud on the high setting, but stays quiet otherwise. I know it's durable, too, because I have 2 toddlers that have knocked it over at least 10 times and it's still running great. I don't know how well it actually works when showing air quality, but the purifier does have an air quality LED indicator, and the app shows air quality level as well.

I have extremely narrow sinus passages so it takes very little to irritate them and plug them up. It took years for me to figure out that air pollution has a lot to do with it. This purifier has definitely helped. I keep it on the 3rd speed throughout the day in between the living room and dining room. A half hour before going to bed I move it to the bedroom and set it on turbo. When I retire for the night I turn the speed down to the second from the lowest. I have found that the bedroom door needs to be shut or it doesn't do the job but turning up the speed isn't an option since we're both used to quiet. It isn't that loud but just a bit more than we can sleep with. In the morning I put it back in the main area and turn it on turbo for at least an hour to catch up again to the pollutants. I also bought a pollution monitor at the same time so I can see the actual results in the levels of pm2.5. The reason I don't trust the amber or red colors which are supposed to be an indication of moderate or unsafe levels is, if I move it to an office at night the level shows red even when the monitor shows very low levels of pollution. After about 20 minutes it changes from amber and back to blue. When I move it back to the main living area again, after just the 20 minutes, it goes to red again and then amber and about 15 minutes later it's back to blue. In those 20 minutes the furnace has not come on, a door hasn't been opened and I have been the only object that has even moved, and that was just moving the purifier. The pollution levels also haven't changed in those 20 minutes according to the monitor. Also, certain smells can change the color to red and that includes good smells like fresh baked bread. In summary, I'm glad I bought it because it definitely does as advertised and easily for the 360 sq. ft. but due to the warning colors not making a lot of sense and the auto setting based on that, due to my condition I'd never leave it on the auto setting. One last thing, I was thinking the first filter didn't need to be cleaned for 3 months but when I looked at the instructions again I saw where it was supposed to be cleaned every month. I was shocked at what this filter had collected. It reminded me of a lint trap on a clothes dryer. A lot of this was what we had been breathing in. I have a second smaller purifier coming for the bedroom so I don't need to keep moving this one back and forth.Update: After more than 1 1/2 years it still performs flawlessly and easily does the job. I have not had to change a filter yet. I just vacuum both sides of all the filters and I'm good to go.Update: I have been using this purifier for almost 5 years and this year it has really been invaluable with the smoky air from the Canadian wildfires. I live in SW MN and we have had days where the AQI has been in the red zone with pm2.5 readings well over 160. This thing has 4 speeds and I typically leave it in the 3rd due to it still being quiet but with the air as bad as it was lately, it wouldn't keep up. The pm2.5 level got up to 144 in the house but after running the purifier on high for 8 1/2 hours, it was reduced to just 5. This purifier works great for the dining room, living room and kitchen and we have a different smaller one for the bedroom. I do have a monitor for checking the pm2.5 levels. Also, I have not had to replace a filter yet. The only thing I do is vacuum the filters whenever I feel they need it. If this thing dies anytime soon, I will be replacing it with the same one.Update: I've now had mine for 5 1/2 years and it's still working like new. I've never had to replace or wash a filter. I just vacuum out all 3 filters about once per month. I don't live in a smog filled city so that might help but we did put up with the heavy and unhealthy smoke from the Canadian wildfires last summer and it handled it just fine.
