FR-AV2 – Compact 32-bit Float Field Recorder and Timecode Generator with Mixer

A fantastic recorder, I am really impressed and satisfied with it. It is well built and it sounds absolutely great and very clean and the menus are very capable and let you change and impressive amount of settings including your own EQ settings whilst still being very intuitive and easy to navigate around and use. I absolutely recommend this great little recorder, really, what's not to like?

I have had a problem with the AV2 and my Panasonic cameras. Using the audio Timecode input to the camera from the 3.5mm TC out of the AV2 ( set on "mic" option ) overloads the Panasonic pre-amps, even set to their lowest gain of -12 dB. it is 50mV p-p ( 17.6 mV rms ) and this is too high for the preamps in Panasonic mirrorless cameras. I don't know if this is just a faulty unit or a firmware issue, but if you want Timecode audio input to a camera you should check if you have this issue also. I have returned this unit and the Bluetooth adapter for this reason. Update : I have been in contact with Tascam about this issue and they suggest using an attenuation cable as they cannot reduce the TC output with a firmware update. I consider this unsatisfactory as this is an additional cost and shouldn't be necessary.

Huge huge issues. I've been on Tascam forums. The unit is distorting and making very hot audio on 32 bit settings. A sudden door closing, a dog barking - anything at all is blowing up the audio. All settings are correct. Equipment and mics tested on other gear. Avoid!

There is something wrong with the screen on the Tascam FR-AV2. With hardly any use, lots of debris has accumulated UNDER the screen and cannot be removed. I put in a warranty claim but am told that this is not covered. The screen is becoming unreadable after just a few careful field trips where the recorder itself has stayed in a bag, with just the mics being outside. There is also a bug where if you connect bluetooth headphones and control the unit via the app, there is strong interference on the XLR inputs. This renders the Bluetooth connectivity mostly useless. It's a shame because the pre-amps are nice and quiet and the otherwise the unit works well, but I would not buy again and this has put me off anything by Tascam as their build qualilty is very poor.

High quality, very functional, basic functionality is very user friendly. Item is great value for money. True sound clarity is recieved on post production. I'm using direct interface with A DAW station instead of SD card. Pair with a sennheiser 600 for quality audio and sound. Will need to tweak setting to suit your ideal output.

Great pocket recorder that works well with timecode.

Does not achieve it full potencial unless paired with the BT2 bluetooth dongle for wireless audio-monitoring and wireless remote control. Eats through AA bateries quite fast but fortunately can be paired with external USB power banks/grips. Would love to have a dedicated gain control knob. In complete darkness impossible to see the non-illuminated buttons. On the other hand the screen never turns completely off even if setup to do just that on the display menus. Files are cut when reaching around 4gb size, even if SD card is 128gb and plenty of free space available Other that these (minor) defaults above a great sounding device and very versatile for video production due to TimeCode support.
