How is this item different from the "3M 2091 P100 Particulate Filter"? Both appear to work with 6000 series respirators and are P100.

Although this filter is better at protecting the filter in situations where an exposed filter might be damaged or compromised by liquids, it should be pointed out that if getting replacement filters is difficult (like it is right now as of 04/2020), the exposed 2091/2096/2097/2291/2297 filters are much easier to clean for reuse. We normally use filters/masks for abatement and protection from silica dust in the construction industry, and getting supplies has been difficult recently. Using the exposed filters we're able to blow the filters out with compressed air and then reuse them, only replacing ones which have been compromised by liquids or other contaminants. Other types of cleaning can be performed for other contaminants (e.g. IR heat exposure to 145 degrees F for 30 minutes to kill pathogens).

Part of the filtration potential is the extremely tiny static charge applied to the materials. When that degrades its ability to filter those smaller particles is considerably worse as time goes on. Despite common assumptions, these do actually degrade. If you're using them for larger particles, ignore that but if you're worried about very fine particles this won't be the way for that. If I were you (of course you've long moved on from this topic but future readers) for DIY etc just get the cheaper exposed circular cartridges that just filter dust and buy the cheaper circular ones for more significant protection when you need it. These are designed to be more heat resistant and the cartridge form vs pancake form are meant for people who wear them for long periods repeatedly for work. They're more expensive for a feature you don't need so save yourself a few bucks.
