Called “Juggernaut,” these are the unmanned combat drones developed by the Republic of San Magnolia in answer to the attacks by the autonomous unmanned drones of the neighboring Empire of Giad, the “Legion”. But they’re only unmanned in name. In reality, they are piloted by the Eighty-sixers—those considered to be less than human and treated as mere tools. Determined to achieve his own mysterious ends, Shin, the captain of Spearhead Squadron, which is comprised of Eighty-sixers, continues to fight a hopeless war on a battlefield where only death awaits him. Review: One of the most important and yet underrated anime of its generation - 86 isn’t “just another mecha anime”. In fact, calling it a mecha anime feels almost misleading. 86 is a raw, beautifully constructed exploration of prejudice, dehumanization, and the quiet courage of choosing empathy when society tells you not to. It wraps that message in a world that is tense, emotionally charged, and full of characters you will remember long after the credits roll. It’s a story that feels uncomfortably real- and timeless. At its core, 86 is about a country that has convinced its citizens that war is bloodless and clean- fought entirely by unmanned drones. Except that’s a lie. The so-called drones are real human soldiers from a persecuted minority group, stripped of rights, forced into the military, and erased from public consciousness. They’re called “Eighty-Six,” reduced to numbers instead of names- a reminder of how frighteningly easy it is for a society to dehumanize those it chooses not to see. This isn’t just fiction. It mirrors real-world histories of scapegoating, racial erasure, and propaganda that paints entire groups as less than human. 86 isn’t subtle about this and it isn’t trying to be. It wants you to confront how propaganda is built, how people learn to accept cruelty as “normal,” and how a society can convince itself that evil is necessary. It’s about the power of human connection and why it matters. Despite its heavy themes, 86 is ultimately hopeful. The emotional center of the story is the connection between: •Shinei “Shin” Nouzen, a soldier who has lost too much, endured too much, yet still carries himself with a quiet dignity and determination you can’t help but admire. • “Lena” Milizé, an idealistic handler who refuses to accept her country’s lies and begins to see the “Eighty-Six” not as distant assets, but as people. Their relationship, built through voice alone at first, becomes a powerful metaphor for how understanding begins the moment you choose to listen. And that’s one of the greatest strengths of the series: It treats empathy not as a weakness but as a radical force capable of breaking apart the lies we’re raised with. It suggests that connection, even fragile, imperfect, difficult connection, can cut straight through propaganda designed to divide. The visuals and soundtrack are next-level, A-1 Pictures delivers some of their finest work here: Absolutely stunning mechanical animation, brutal, visceral battles that balance chaos and beauty, quiet character moments animated with incredible nuance, and a soundtrack that elevates every scene- from haunting choral pieces to emotional melodic themes. 86 doesn’t just tell its story- it shows you what its characters feel, what the world looks like through their eyes, and how hope flickers even in endless war. It’s emotionally resonant, intense, and thought-provoking. What makes 86 so gripping isn’t just the plot or the action- it’s the way it treats its audience with respect. It refuses to sugarcoat the realities of dehumanization, but it never feels nihilistic. Instead, it continually emphasizes: •Humanity is stubborn. •Compassion is revolutionary. •People kept apart by fear or prejudice can still choose to reach for each other. You might come for the tension and the action but you’ll stay because you care deeply about these characters, their trauma, their resilience, and their hope. So here is why you should watch it: Because 86 is more than an anime- it’s a reflection of us. It’s a reminder of how easily societies repeat old injustices, and how vital it is that we keep fighting to recognize one another’s humanity. It’s powerful, it’s relevant, and it’s wrapped in a story that is emotionally gripping from the very first episode. If you’re looking for an anime that will move you, challenge you, and stay with you, 86 is one of the finest modern series you can watch. I hope we get more seasons soon, as the light novels offer plenty more source material. For those who want to continue reading the story- season 1 includes light novel 1-3, so light novel 4 is where the story continues. Review: very good anime. - Great Show glad we got around to watching it. Kind of hope it gets another season.

An impressive production
Twenty three episodes on three discs. Good subtitles though they were in white and difficult to read with some backgrounds. For the most part the dub is excellent and the subtitles are not needed. No nudity. Good animation and picture. Good story in a war type setting. Be careful fast forwarding through credits as sometimes the story continues through them. A lot of anime here for your dollar.

A series worthy of the personal collections
86 belongs with Ghost in the Shell (GITS): Stand Alone Complex (SAC), GITS SAC 2nd GIG, Full Metal Alchemist, Made in Abyss, and Promised Neverland (Season 1). Solid storytelling & flushed out characters. What is not said is as important as what is said. Fluff level is very low. Many points are worthy of discussion. Though stating the obvious, 86 is a series that takes place during a time of war. The level of violence and implied violence is considerable. But the violence is not frivolous. Not all characters make it to the last episode.
