The data sheet gives a Chemical Abstracts Service number (CAS#) for it, and that is 1332-09-8. Google that number. **Q: do you need to keep this in a bag or in the tray in my cascade canister filter?** A: It can be placed in your tray. it is loose. Might want to make sure you use a tray for the canister that has the lid on it. **Q: Does it work the same way as the ceramic bio rings?** A: A million times better. The ceramic rings are trash. This has a lot more surface area because of the small cavaties in each piece. This stuff is fantastic for your bacteria. **Q: I have a Magnum 350 filter which has a canister that has charcoal on the inside and a foam sleeve outside. Do I use this to replace the charcoal?** A: No, charcoal is a chemical filter. Matrix is a biological filter.If you did not need chemical filtering in your system, you could repurpose the Magnum 350 as a bio-filter by replacing the carbon with Matrix. And also remember that purigen is a must in the last stage of filtration. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Don’t know what to think, the stones are pretty small in size and many are discolored *by S***. on 25 July 2021* I expected better quality from Seachem, however I was surprised to see many discolored non pumice stones mixed with the media. More over most pumice stones were tiny, like as if they packed this lot from left over batch of tiny leftover rubble. Had to clean it under water several times to remove the powder and then use it. Overall the amount of media was more than expected, can say easily more then 1 kg, hence it compensates for the non pumice stones and tiny stones. But you need to use fine mesh bag to avoid matrix from flowing into motor impeller. Can’t say about effectiveness, as I have other seeded media over 5 Kgs already taking care of the nitrites. Just wanted to try out matrix as a long term media instead of ceramic rings. I guess time will only tell how good it is lasts.
