Allied Tools 59091 235-Piece Mechanics Tool Set in Fold Out Case

PROS: I've had this set for over twelve years now. It is worth its weight in gold and has never failed me when I need it. Can turn bar stock into a threaded rod. If I need a threaded hole then I can make one. Case is well laid out, labeled and should last a lifetime.CONS: As with any tool working with metal you have to be careful not to mismatch metals or mistreat these tools.Yes I'd buy this set again if I needed it, and would recommend it to a friend, also nice to see that the price is almost the same as it was twelve years ago.

I bought this as a very occasional use kit to take with me so I wouldn't have to wait for someone else to get around to fixing a stripped bolt hole. I didn't want to spend much money as this will not get used much, and if it wont do the job-- the Mechanic who has the really good Snap On set can come and fix it.For its intended purpose it is great. I have fixed a couple of small stripped holes with the taps and ran it down the threads of a bolt. It has held up in mild steel just fine. It is a very good value for the amount of kit you get for the money. It is cheap but does the job, I wouldn't think about this at all if you plan on using them daily, buy a good set for that.

This is a great set just remember it is a Standard Tap and Die Set and it is not metric. Please don't make the same mistake I made when I had ordered this set. (SAE) is an indication that it is Standard and not Metric. This was not covered in my Auto Technology classes, so, I didn't had a clue. Please also make sure that anyone who get a Tap and Die set, make sure they have a heli-coil that matches the thread repair to make the repair much more stable, stronger and longer lasting. Some may use "Lock-Tite or red thread locker.However, please be aware that the adjustable die handle will break and it would be wise to get a "T" handle or Tap wrench to start and complete the rethreading process. The "T" wrench is for a much more smaller Tap than any of the much bigger taps that are provide in the kit. This is my first time actually completely a thread project without my instructor being near. It was real exciting.However, if anyone has a Toyota like me, I would say to invest into a metric tap and die set as well because you would need that also. I did a drain plug thread it is was M12x1.25... I had enlarged the plug to M12x1.75 because Auto Supply places had it in stock. However, I wish anyone luck in finding a M12x1.75 Heli-coil because they are hard to find in Californian Northbay. I had searched many stores and didn't find it anywhere but on Amazon. Perhaps others, I hope, will have better luck.Anyway, this is a pretty great product but get a Tap Wrench that fits the tap used, and be prepared to break the adjustable Tap Handle that it comes with because it breaks easily and I was being very careful, and I was working quite slow because I didn't want to make any mistakes, like worst case scenario, the dreaded cross-threading scare will happen. And all that hard work will have to be performed again, until the person gets it right.Working on a car takes patience and time. In the field, time is money and not too many people have the luxury of time. The demand is excellence in a fast pace environment. My instructor told me, he has to do four tire replacements in 30 minutes or he will lose money because he is on flat rate.So, save the headache and get the Tap Wrench and don't use the adjustable handle that comes with the set because it will break with minimum effort even when being careful.

For the price you expect a fairly decent kit of tool in a decent portable case to use in your vehicle in case of emergency. The thing that struck me was the horrible quality of the case. The top latches pop off in your hands, and don't go back on easily, when you try. The tools are held in by plastic retaining clips that were broken or mis-formed. All the tools were everywhere, and 8 or 10 would not go back in their retainers. This makes for a nice rattle sound as you are driving... good fun. Most of the parts are small, clips, retainers, screw tips.... etc. You would be be better off getting a few decent tools from Home Depot or Craftsman and a small tool box. My biggest concern with the set is that it's for emergency.. and in an emergency, I would hate to rely on this quality.

I went out on a limb and bought this tap and die set b/c of the great price. I am shocked at how well this set works. The tap handle is a little different than what I am used to and took a second to figure out that only one side is meant to screw in to tighten the tap into the "t" handle. After I got that right the tap worked flawlessly. Today I tapped an exhaust manifold with the nf 7/16-20 tap and it continues to impress me. No complaints with this set. If handled properly this set will do what any high end set will do.

I bought this because every now and then I need a tap or die around the house for yard/garden equipment, etc. For the price, I didn't expect much but this is good quality material. In less than a week after I got it I was working on my truck and broke a bolt off. After I got it out, I had to re-tap the hole. This worked great and saved me a lot of headaches and time. Again, when you don't think you need something, that's then you need it most! At least that's what I tell my wife when I buy new tools - lol.

The taps and dies work just fine for me but the tap wrench blocks crumbled into dust when first used; I had to get the tap out of the hole with a crescent wrench. Luckily I had my home made tap wrench for the larger taps but will be searching for a good quality small one. I'll probably spend more on the wrench than I did on this set but knowing the taps and dies are all right then I don't mind. All in all, decent value but make sure you have a good quality tap wrench handy.

I got this set to keep in my truck as just an emergency tool set. As I suspected the ratchet is pretty poor quality it seems a little sloppy and loose but I had already planned to replace it with a spare 3/8 drive quality ratchet I had laying around. All the sockets are decent and lock up nice and tight on a quality ratchet. Everything in the kit seems pretty good apart from the ratchet and even it would no doubt do the job for light and infrequent work. For the $25.00 I payed it's a deal for something to leave in the trunk with the jumper cables, another bonus is you won't care to much if it's stolen. I wouldn't recommend if you're planning to use this set a lot unless it's really light work just because of the ratchet quality, if you replaced the ratchet with something decent It would likely last for a long time.
