Made in China for a Japanese knife manufacturer.
I added this to the basic kitchen knife set they sell along with matching kitchen shears. For the price it's great. These are Japanese style knives made in China for a Japanese knife maker. Because of that I trust the Japanese to stay on top of the quality control. The steel should be decent with a good heat treat because Kai would be embarrassed if it won't hold an edge or breaks due to inappropriate hardening. When I received them I saw that my expectations were met. These are not the greatest kitchen knives but there are a lot of good qualities to them with nice thin blades for slicing, good grind lines and nice sharp edges. All that and a brand name made them a perfect gift for a woman who had a mismatched assortment of various kitchen knives. The very reasonable price was great too.I'm sure there are better Chinese made kitchen knives and more expensive Japanese and German made sets are probably better as well but unless you need a fancy name on your knives, this set is a really good value and was well appreciated as a gift.

As a bartender, I love this knife for thin citrus wheels!
Love this knife for slicing citrus, especially thin citrus wheels behind a bar. The serrated edge gets through lemon and lime wedges with ease. I will be getting another one for home, because it also handles tomato wheels smoothly. Also handles the intense commercial dishwasher machine we use at work. This knife is my shining star bar tool!

Inexpensive yet high quality
First time I used this knife, I demonstrated how sharp it was to my husband by cutting an onion in the air. Such great quality!!! It's very sharp, well designed so it's attractive, and it even comes with a blade cover. I am astounded at how inexpensive this knife is compared to pricy knives that were never nearly this sharp.

Outstanding knife for the price!
I purchased this just to see if it was any good. It is! Made by the same parent company as Shun, this knife is far superior to knives many times the price. The handle is basic but comfortable. The blade is beautiful and sharp! It holds an edge extremely well! It cuts better than anything I've used that wasn't VASTLY more expensive. After using this knife for a few days I decided to purchase the entire line of Kai Luna knives. They are unbelievably good! Especially for how inexpensive they are. I highly recommend this and all Kai Luna knives.

Knife Geek's Review
First, I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5, because mine had a small chip in the edge out of the package. I chose to simply sharpen it out, rather thsn return it for replacement. On a more expensive knife, I'd find that unacceptable; but these are $12 shipped with prime. Otherwise these are still a great value, as I explain below. For $12 you get a great intro into more Asian style knives with thinner blades. The thin blade means these won't take chopping or abuse like a thicker Western style knife will, but you'll gain much better slicing performance. The steel is a base grade, German made 4116 stainless. 4116 has acceptable edge retention, but it sharpens easily and is quite rust resistant. The thin handles allow for an easy pinch grip, but are still comfortable even for me with my large hands (I wear size XL gloves). The soft rubber grip inserts are also a nice touch for a home cook's knife that won't see the inside of a commercial kitchen. The hard plastic portion of the handle had a couple of bits of molding flash, but that's easily taken care of with a few strokes from a nail file. The hammered finish looks great, and helps to let food slide off (release) as claimed. The included sheath is another nice touch, particularly if counter space or personal preference lead you to store your knives in a drawer rather than in a block or magnetic strip on or above counter. The sheath will be tight out of the package so be careful and take your time putting the knife into it until it breaks in.The 8 inch blade length plus handle makes this about the longest knife that will fit being held tip down into a standard size kitchen sink for cleaning. The 7 inch Santoku or 6 inch utility in the same Luna line would both be better choices if you're a small apartment, boat, or RV with a smaller sink and less counter space.I bought this to evaluate the Luna line as a possible recommendation for friends who aren't knife geek's like me. My verdict is that these are a great option for anyone who wants a good knife at a low price.

I have literally purchased nine of these knives!!!
Kai knives. I have owned one for over ten years but rarely used it because of the thin handle. But since its one of my sharpest knives I 've been using it lately for slicing sashimi. I never realized that it was a japanese knife because I bought it on sale due to the great price but normally just use Global and Shun knives. When I finally got around to looking for Kai knives on amazon I couldn't believe the price!!! So I ordered three different Kai brand knives, that cost $10/ $14/ $40. When they arrived I opened the smaller two and loved the edge and feel of the balance and handle. I decided to return the 8" blade because it is much larger than I prefer. Wow. It's such a great knife I couldn't help but buy it for everyone I know and I'm stopping to write this review before i order one more for my son (who already owns a bunch of great knives) but I find this knife perfect for just about everything. I'm glad they have a lot in stock, I'm not sure I'm done ordering!!!

Just ok
I don't quite understand all the reviews saying how wonderfully sharp this knife is. It held a good edge for a couple days and now I am considering sharpening it. It came sharp, but dulls rather quickly IMO. Just like a normal knife. The handle is comfortable, and the blade is attractive. Its fine, but the reviews are a bit over the top IMO.
