Can this be used for making artistic stones for painting?

I haven't tried this idea, have just used for fixing stones round the edge of a garden pond. But I think it would be worth experimenting with artistic stones. Do you want a rough or smooth finish? I wanted a smooth finish for the mortar between my stones and achieved this with the gentle use of a wetted cloth.

Does this set to a sand/light brown colour?

II used it dry and piped between slabs so the moisture from the ground then set it to a light grey colour.
