FileMaker Pro is considered to be the easiest to use of relational databases - and it is. It is also one of the most capable and powerful databases - and if you want to access that power, it is one of the most complex. That's why this book has 869 pages of text, including 7 pages of error codes. You'll never see most of these error codes, but the sheer number of them should give you an idea of just how complex FileMaker Pro can be. This book truly lives up to the premise of the missing manuals series: "the book that should have been in the box". FileMaker Pro provide s extensive online help facility, but it is often terse and lacking in examples. The FileMaker Pro missing manual, on the other hand, is pleasantly verbose and has many examples. Moreover, it provides a necessary education in database theory and design as well. There's a wonderful introduction, for example, on using Boolean values. FileMaker Pro has many unique features, such as repeating fields and portals. The book explains them all. Of special interest to users beyond the beginner stage are the chapters on scripting within FileMaker Pro. It is not an exaggeration to say that "FileMaker Pro 11: The Missing Manual" is an entire course on using FileMaker Pro. The authors have just the right writing style - not too sparse, not too talkative. Every page is packed with useful information not just on FileMaker, but on creating databases as well. You can use this book as an A-to-Z training course or as a reference. It's a great - if not mandatory - investment for your FileMaker library.Jerry

tI thought the Kindle version would not only save me some money, but also I could have it for work over the weekend and get ahead of the game.Well, it downloaded right away and I set about trying to find a few solutions to things that were not made clear in the static FMPro "help" files found online. I was in for some surprises. (Not the least of which is that the demo version of FMPro needs to be upgraded before you can use some of the "basic" functions that you will find missing. Talk about frustrating!)First of all, this electronic version makes searching pretty difficult when you can't search on more than one word! I wanted to find a way to print a multiple page report. That never came up in any search I tried. Oddly, when I search with Google, so far I have twice found my answer...in this very book! Yes, there in the Google info for the book, there is the "Missing Manual" page with my search term highlighted.I want to build a "Value List" for some check boxes. Do I find a useful example in the Kindle version? No. I had to turn to FMPro's own forums.As for the design of how the book works? Thumbs down. Several parts of the book are curiously formatted in text that is supposed to offer some "tip", and that info is smaller text than the rest of the page! Why would THAT have been seen as a great idea? You have to hit a button to use a slider to increase text size, then the regular text is too big. It is a clumsy way to read a technical book.I wish I had the paper book where I could probably use an index and maybe find content more easily. As it is, despite the reviews exclaiming about the clear writing, unless you really want a basic intro with no examples, I think you will do better with the online FileMaker forums, where others can answer question and explain or offer ideas. I have!UPDATE, 12 Dec 11: I am managing to build my database and must admit, I'm finding FMPro to do what I need (almost matching my preferred Panorama application) but my progress is in no way thanks to this "Missing Manual". I keep trying to use it but it isn't as useful as a printed book,

Sin haber terminado de leer el libro me atrevo a recomendarlo, buen precio, su versión electrónica se lee correctamente en ipad, iphone, imac 27", macbook air 11" en cualquier lugar.Es un libro que permite acercar la filosofía de la base de datos desde un punto de vista práctico sin tanta teoría explicativa y difícil de digerir para un neófito.El enlace a la página con los Missing CD trabaja a la perfección permitiendo bajar los ejemplo de bases por capítulos o del libro completo, los datos de ejemplo ayudan a trabajar con la lectura y probar el comportamiento de las funciones y operadores de bases de datos.El trato coloquial con que está escrito permite recuperarse de lo áspero que es el tema, incluso me he reído con algunos comentarios que hacen los autores.Si quieres aprender de la mejor base para mac, este es libro, sin duda cómpralo. Ojalá lo termine luego y pueda implementar las soluciones que espero crear con Filemaker, en un tiempo más les cuento.

Book turned up damaged with dog-eared corners. - very disappointing.You forget about this kind of problem when buying online...Edit: Have received a fair bit of negative comment about my review which was about "buying this book from Amazon". A dog-eared book is not what I expect to receive, hence my review is truthful and fair about my book (hard-copy) purchase.I would also like to point out that Amazon has subsequently introduced a 'packaging feedback' form, which had it been available at the time, would have been more appropriate.My comments add nothing about the content of the book, but they may prove helpful to other book buyers on the internet. At a physical store I would never buy a book that was not in pristine condition.I stand by the comments made in my initial review, and trust that this additional information assists.

FileMaker is a great piece of the Database Designing Software.Sadly it doesn't ship with a hard copy manual. This book however is an ideal companion for the Beginner and there's advanced hints and tips for the seasoned user.A must-have purchase.
