Not for wide calves
What I like: they’re very warm, and I like how they sit around my foot like a perfectly foot shaped bag of cozy. I wear them to bed when it’s cold in the room and my feet will probably escape my blanket. In a 56 degree F room my feet barely know it’s cold even if they’re out for a while. And they’re breathable, no sweaty toes. They’re pricy socks but they’re quality, warm, old school wool socks. I live in a cold climate and I’ve owned many wool socks but these are different. They feel like something you’d find in your grandpas steamer trunk from when he was stationed in the arctic back in 1898. What I dislike: They don’t fit my wide calves. They will shrink if you’re not careful, and they don’t fit in my shoes very well. You’ll need some really roomy boots for these. I thought I wore roomy boots but they’re not roomy with these socks inside. The toe seam is very prominent so maybe I need to wear them inside out. Overall: Despite issues, I give them 5 stars because they’re excellent socks. My toes are warm as I write this. It’s currently -10F and windy outside and my house is pretty drafty. Follow their washing instructions religiously. And if this is your first pair, be smarter than me and just order one pair to try them out, to see if your boots are roomy enough.

The Warmest, Toastiest Socks
The winters in Illinois can get extremely frigid, especially in the months of January and February. That said, for me, one of the greatest areas of vulnerability on my body are my toes. Several years ago, I thought to give these thermal socks a try, and boy, was I glad I did. They were consistently warm. My feet NEVER froze, and having said that, whenever i wear these thermal stocks, my feet are always toasty. The quality is second to none. They are 85% merino wool and 15% nylon (for elasticity), so they do not shrink in the wash. These socks are bulky, so you want to be sure you wear shoes that are able to expand a bit, to comfortably be able to wear these in those shoes. But that is certainly not a deal breaker. J.B. Field's Icelandic Wool Socks, in many different varieties, have proven to be a quality decision that I highly recommend.

Very thick, nice quality, but loose. Not a hiking sock.
I wear a size 10-1/2 men's shoe. My feet are average width. I ordered the Large. This is only an initial impression review based on fit and feel, as I have yet to use them in extreme cold temps. These socks are very thick. Thickest wool socks I have seen. I am confident they will be very warm. However, if you are needing a sock to fit inside your hiking boots, you might want to look elsewhere, unless your boots are too big. My winter hiking boots, which fit perfectly with a single pair of merino wool socks, are WAY TOO TIGHT with these on. I tried this for testing purposes only and I am not deducting any points for this because I assumed they would be very thick socks, and therefore did not buy them for this purpose. These are better suited for the less active winter activities in which one might be wearing a large pack boot, such as sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, etc. But for the hiker, stick with thinner merino wool socks. These socks are very loose, even on my average width feet. They are the correct length but they are much looser than any other sock I currently own. Based on my experience with loose fitting wool socks, this is likely to be a problem inside a pack boot - falling or getting bunched up. I don't recommend these unless you plan on wearing a thinner pair of socks under these, or unless you have very wide or thick feet. This is the main reason for me docking a star. Although I didn't buy these for use in a boot, I still find them to be looser than I prefer while lounging around inside a home, or tent, etc. They will serve their purpose well for me however - a warm sock for winter camping (sleeping inside a sleeping bag when temps are below freezing).

Washing Instrucitons?
Thick and warm but there were no washing instrucitons on either the socks or the packaging. I know enough that wolk should not go in the dryer but there needs to be washing instrucitons for people who have no clue how to care for wool socks.

Thick, Soft, and WARM!
These are the biggest, thickest, warmest winter socks I've ever owned! Great for layering in large snow boots during the icy dead of winter at the Canadian border. They are fuzzy, soft, and keep me feeling like I'm stepping on clouds! They're also tough and durable for use when snowshoeing or kick sledding with my dogs!

Toasty warm and do not shrink
So warm and cozy! I got them to keep my feet warm during an MRI, and they were perfect. My feet and calves stayed toasty warm and I didn’t get any leg cramps at all. I wore them in the house for most of this cold winter. I wash them in the washer and dry them in the dryer, and they hold up great and do not shrink. Highly recommended.

Socks that arrived were thin, unbranded nylon socks. Not thick winter socks. The seller refunded immediately

Thewse are greeat socks but take care in getting the right size. Mine are a bit too large so the heel part rides up.
