THE best flip top notepad for reporters, mystery investigators ... and you (I suspect ;) ).
THE SHORT STORYTHE top notch flip top pocket note pad for people who really care about their notes. Great size, construction and usability, high quality paper and cover-board, dandy elastic to keep it all civilized. If you just need a throw away pad for notes you will dispose of quickly, this is probably more than you need. Get a $.50 model and be on your way. BUT ... if you want a great note book for those notes you intend to keep around for a long while, this is the class act of the pocket pad, flip top market. Is a great flip-top note pad worth this much to you? Well, below are the reasons it is worth it to me.THE LONG STORYI'm a writer, a frequent interviewer of people with detailed information to share, a person into whose head frequently pop ideas I want to capture ... AND a long time fan of great stationary. As such, I think I qualify as someone who takes a certain portion of my note-taking pretty seriously (in that I enjoy doing it and like to put my important information somewhere it's taken care of by the notebook I've recorded it in). When I stumbled on the Moleskine line of notebooks in a book store years ago, I quickly fell in love with many of their products. Given their high quality construction, superior page weight and texture, and great range of colors and sizes and formats, this shouldn't be too big a surprise. But of all the Moleskine items I've tried, this is my all time favorite. While their side opening, book-style pocket note pads are wonderful (I have several), much of the note taking I do in the field doesn't provide the luxury of opening the notebook on a table or in my lap and writing in it with one hand while I hold it open with the other. For "writing in my hand" field notes, I've always preferred a notebook that opens from the top, not the side. For years I put up wtih inferior, flimsy, poorly designed flip top spiral pads that drove me nuts. Then I found the Moleskine Reporter. THIS is by far my all time favorite notebook in the flip top configuration. Why?> For me, the most important feature of this pad is the stiff backing and flip top cover board. Both are very stiff and sturdy, providing great support for writing in your hand as well as great protection for the pages within when you tuck the pad in your pants pocket or work bag.> The quality of the paper inside is terrific; thick and tough with a great creamy finish.> The binding is top notch and I can safely say I've never had a page fall out or tear out unless I wanted it to come out.> There's a selection of pages in the back perforated for easy removal.> The elastic band can either keep the cover closed or mark the page you want to open to, your choice, and is sturdy enough that it won't fall apart or loosen with use.> The pocket in the back for receipts or other small slips of paper.> This pad is available in either blank, lined or grid page designs. All this means that when I head out into the field to take notes, I've always got a pad I can count on to perform. A when I finally fill one up, the old one goes on the book shelf with my journals (something I'd never do with cheap, "fall apart" flip top note pads) marked with "Beginning Date - Ending Date". These can be hard to find in bricks and mortar stores, so when I do need a new one, I hop on-line and order another one ... or more. My most recent one arrived when I had only 2 pages left in the old one.My ONLY complaint about the Moleskine Reporter is that it is only available (as far as I've been able to find) in black. So many Moleskine pads are available in a wide range of vibrant colors and it is so much easier for me to misplace small black notepads than ones that are brightly colored. I have lost at least one Reporter partly because its dark profile made it easy not to notice. Please Moleskine, do offer the Reporter in at least ONE bright color (red, orange or yellow would be my choices).By the way, while I can't prove it, I've long suspected that THIS is the notebook all those detectives are flipping open when my wife and I watch our favorite British Mysteries ... I don't know that for sure, but it really looks that way. I'm not personally taking notes on where people were last Thursday night between the hours of 11pm and 3am, BUT when I want to be sure the information I'm recording will be around for a long time to come, the Moleskine Reporter is the pad I turn to.No citizens of the United Kingdom were harmed in any way during the writing of this review. ;)

Awesome for a contractor.
I was tired of writing little notes and measurements on my hand, writing shopping lists on whatever scrap of wood was laying around the job site, and trying to draw plans on napkins. I needed something I could carry with me all the time. Too large and I'd leave it in the truck. Too small and I'd lose it in the laundry. This is the perfect size for my back left pocket. An added bonus is that it balances out my wallet and makes driving a lot more comfortable. Within 2 days I carrying this in my pocket I stopped noticing that it was there. Within a week I was filling up pages with everything from coworkers' lunch orders, to email addresses, lists of specialty tools needed for jobs the next day, small sketches and diagrams, and whatever else I wanted to remember. I'm one of the last people that will eventually start using a smart phone, and this greatly helps delay the inevitable. The notebook itself is extremely well made. All the details, from the little pocket in the back, to the detachable pages and the elastic bookmark were well designed and implemented. And the cover feels nice and is really tough. As a contractor, stuff I used every day needs to take a beating, and this little notebook does just that. The paper is nice too, perfect for pencil, and pen, but a sharpie will bleed through. Though, for it's size, a sharpie is too big anyway. The reporter style is perfect for my needs because most of what I use it for is lists. Writing the quantity of an item in the spine of a regular notebook is frustrating. You have to crack it open to really use the full sheet. Oh, and no spiral binding makes this truly comfortable in my pocket.Only thing I'd change if I could change something would be to offer one where every page is removeable.

For the dedicated writer...
I took delivery of five of these about ten days ago, and I have to say that I love them. I can say that already because I've used other Moleskine products for quite a while and these are of the same quality. This is just the first time I've used these large Reporter Notebooks. I'm a writer, and a couple of years back, I picked up a few of the Pocket Reporter Notebooks to jot down ideas, or phrases that I come across and wanted to remember. The pocket notebook works passably well for that purpose, but because of its size, you can't get into a good writing flow because you're constantly moving to the next line, and it fills up pretty quickly. The pocket ones turned out to be better for names, numbers, errands, etc., and if needed, I could still use it for my writing ideas. But, I decided to step up to the larger size Reporter Notebook for most of my writing needs, and I love it. The first reason is that I'm left-handed, and it always bothers me to have to write in a notebook where my writing hand is on the spine. That's especially true for spiral notebooks. But, these Reporter Notebooks are great because the flip-top allows lefties the same easy writing that right handed folks enjoy. This large Reporter Notebook gives a little more room for expounding on ideas, and adds to the ease of making out my notes later on. The larger size allows me to flesh out my thoughts a bit more rather than just put down key words. There's a slight downside to using the Reporter notebook, because if you want to write on the front and back of each page, you have turn the notebook around back and forth every time you move to the next page side. For me, that's not a problem because I have a particular pen that I use, and it shows through the other side of the page too much to write on top of, and make sense between the two layers. So, I just use the front side of pages. If you use normal ball-points, this won't be an issue for you, so you can double your coverage using the back sides of all the pages. The little extras are the back pockets for cards, or other thin items you'd like to store, and there's a few detachable pages in the back if you need to jot something down and rip it out to give to someone. The band is great for bookmarking, and I can't say enough about how well the Moleskine products hold up over time. These are my go-to products for all my writing and record keeping needs. And, maybe I'm projecting too much fanciful praise on these notebooks, but there's a certain romance or feeling of comfort in having something that feels robust and specifically designed for what you want to do. To me, it harkens to moments in my past when I'd be in a library and smelling that old-book smell. Once you sense it the first time, there's no substitute. The same goes for this Large Reporter Notebook.
