My favorite wood finish!
What's not to love about shellac? It leaves a beautiful finish, it's easy to use, it goes on and over anything, and it's non-toxic! I often do my french polishing at the coffee table while watching a show since there's no toxic or foul odors, just a faint, sweet ethanol smell. It can be dyed, or can be purchased in different shades to get just the tone you need. I prefer to buy these flakes since they last forever and I can mix up just enough to finish a couple projects. Just recently I finished two electric guitars, a combination wine rack/side table, and a bassinet for my son. These flakes mixed up into a finish that's as good as any I've used. They can be a little pricey up front buying by the pound, but you're getting a LOT of finish and this could last the average hobby woodworker years. The per-project cost ends up being very minimal. Unless I have a good reason to use something else (like urethane in more heavy duty or outdoor applications) every project I do gets at least a little shellac.

High Quality Shellac Flakes
High quality pure shellac flakes, very clean with no foreign material. Dissolves well at multiple cuts. I use Everclear to dissolve for food grade usage (expensive), and then denatured alcohol for projects where no food contact is expected (cheaper). The finish is near clear with a very faint yellow tint that goes well with more modern designs where reddish tint might not be ideal, it brings out the grain well and builds a durable finish. It can be sanded 240 grit or higher to give a super smooth finish, and can be highly polished. I really like the flexibility to control my own cut, over the store bought pre-dissolved shellacs. I also no longer have to worry about getting an old can of store bought that I have to throw away, it is always fresh. In the photo you can see 4 coats of 1.5 lb cut shellac on a basic plywood beside cantilever table I built, the plywood starting color was similar to baltic birch. I highly recommend these flakes.

Wonderful product
Outstanding product that has lasted many years. I use primarily on old singer sewing machine cabinets, and has been great to work with. Learned the french polishing technique and the finish is simple beautiful

Good Stuff
Very good stuff. Just be aware that the 1 pound measurement seems to be gross weight, not net weight. My lab scales said the whole thing weighed 16 oz. I really like working with this shellac. I don't usually bother to break up te flakes, I just use an Intllab Magnetic Mixer about $30 on AZ and it works beautifully to mix shellac. Add alcohol to container, put container on mixer, turn mixer on, make sure it is spinning then add flakes. You don't need to stand there and wait for it to dissolve as you add it but you do want to make the flakes don't a settle to the bottom. You can sue a sealed jar and run it all night if you want.

Works great.
As a woodturner, shellac is one of my favorite finishes. These flakes dissolve completely and leave a great finish. The cost of a pound of flakes and the alcohol is less than a quart of premade shellac.

Amateur finisher finds no fault, highly recommends.
Product arrived well crumbled in bag. Didn't have to process the flakes at all before mixing with alcohol (1lb cut in pint of DNA I ordered from Quality Chemical on Amazon). Dissolved rapidly but still waited a full day. Filtering through cheesecloth I found 3 or 4 tiny grains of debris left. I'd say this was pretty clean shellac. French polishing with it (first-timer). It is so clear it was a trifle hard to judge how well I was applying it at first. The shellac has a mild-spicy-pleasant odor when fresh that diminishes quickly. The shellac bag has a seal but I put the bag into a ziploc bag and am storing it in a cool basement. I went with this so I could use an almost-pure ethanol denatured alcohol. Am highly satisfied and dain-bramage-free. Update Oct 2023--Works as great four years later. The remaining contents of the bag are powder by this point. Still: dissolves quickly, applies easily, looks great.

Very expensive
Here’s a straight cost comparison between: Zinsser Bulls Eye SealCoat (ready-made) — $24.99 per quart (2 lb cut, dewaxed, ready to use) DIY from dewaxed shellac chips (at ~$46.99/lb plus denatured alcohol) 🧮 Cost to Make One Quart at a 2 lb Cut A 2 lb cut means 2 pounds of shellac resin per gallon of alcohol. So for 1 quart (¼ gallon) at 2 lb cut: Resin needed = 2 lb × 0.25 = 0.5 lb shellac chips Cost for chips: 0.5 × $46.99 ≈ $23.50 Plus alcohol (≈1 quart worth): ≈ $6 (depends on local price) → Total ≈ $29.50 📊 Price Comparison Product Cut Approx Cost per Quart Bulls Eye SealCoat (ready-made) 2 lb $24.99 DIY from Dewaxed Chips (2 lb cut) 2 lb ~$29.50 🧠 Conclusion Bulls Eye SealCoat at $24.99/quart is cheaper than mixing your own 2 lb cut from chips (~$29.50), if your goal is just the lowest price per quart ready to use. DIY becomes more cost-effective if: You use shellac a lot (so the alcohol and chips are amortized over several batches), and/or You want other cuts (1 lb, 3 lb) or precise control over the finish. But purely on price per quart at a 2 lb cut, SealCoat wins. Also, if you need other cuts that are less than 2 lbs, you could always dilute the SealCoat with denatured alcohol.

So far, so good.
Made a 2 pound cut yesterday, everything in the jar was dissolved by this morning. (used grain alcohol from the liquor store. Pricey but no contaminants like with denatured alcohol from the hardware store.) There is no clumping at the bottom; clear (ochre) liquid. Comes from India so maybe we’re helping some poor guy out in the boonies who’s collecting the lac goo. Best price I could find.
