Biking? Or Life
To précis this book in a few words might be a huge task, yes it is about the man that is the long distance motorcycle king but in analysing his reasons and affect on others around him , particularly the author, we get insight into the mind of man and much more . Definitely an interesting read but not a classic in the way her first novel The Perfect Vehicle is..at least not on first reading and to be fair I must have read the first novel 5 times now !

Another fresh and illuminating look at motorcycling. Recommended.
If you have read MHP's "Perfect vehicle" you will be familiar with her intellectual approach to motorcycling. If not you may be pleasantly surprised by it. I hadn't realised how much of my bike reading had used a fairly restricted vocabulary and grammar, much like most sports journalism. This is because it had mostly been written by men in a style aimed at other men. MHP concerns herself more with how motorcycling makes us feel and what we invest emotionally in riding. The eponymous "man" is someone who travels enormous distances on two wheels and who is as obsessed and driven as any elite athlete but who is pretty much unknown outside a small segment of motorcycling. She tries to analyse his obsession and experiences long distance riding herself to do so.This is not for gear or petrol heads but those who enjoy a fresh perspective on riding.A very good read; incisive and thought provoking.
