Not very strong
This product does a reasonable job, but it's not quite strong enough to close a heavy gate. I added it as a second spring to an identical one from a different supplier, although a very similar product is available with a larger and stronger spring which might have been better. It was easy enough to fit. The screws on the other spring started to rust quite quickly so I used galvanised screws for this one.The inserts have a tendency to pop out when the spring is tensioned, but a tap with a hammer seated them securely enough to stay in place.

Quality & Value
Good quality gate spring finished in black powder coat for durability.I’ve been using these gate springs for over 20 years and although they may be rebranded with different names are basically all identical to the ones that can be purchased from the retail park screw and tool stores. Depending on the size of the gate, it’s much better to fit 2 gate springs on larger gates rather than try to apply too much tension on a single spring that will result in it separating from the fixed parts of the device. The widely reported problem of the tension studs not holding can easily be resolved by cutting the tension bar down to make longer studs. I’ve done this myself on 2 gate springs that have been in place for over 3 years. Simply use a screwdriver in place of the tension bar to apply the desired pressure.

There are ways to win
There have been some poor reviews about Merriway gate springs, which I quite understand. I was looking to buy from a British manufacturer rather than a foreign supplier. I do hope my purchase is actually made here.I purchased gate spring BH05795 8” and found as others have commented, there are no instructions supplied and the only information, poor that it is, is on their page on the Amazon website. Others have also commented that the pegs are too small for the spring holes! So, to stop them falling out I wrapped them in tin foil to thicken them a little. For further security I covered the pegs in Sugru, a mouldable plasticine like glue that sets hard. Also the best information is on YouTube ‘how to fit a gate spring.’ They will tell you really useful things like - if your gate closes clockwise then tension the gate spring anti clockwise. Also the more vertical the spring is, the better. You can find out some really useful tips on there. It’s early days with my gate hinge. It is working presently, thankfully.

Very poor quality
Please avoid - not fit for purpose.Tried to fit to wooden gate, firstly there are no instructions, the lugs do not stay in place, the tension bar sheered, very difficult to tension as lugs fall out, and not particularly effective when fixed. Best pay a little more and something that is better quality.

Missing screws
Pretty light weight use only. Fiddly to put tension on and it never came with the 4 screws that were supposed to be supplied, but otherwise ok.
