despite usually being a avid "the book is far better than the film kinda girl
I think this film is generally under-rated. The majority of 'stuff from the book' which has been omitted from the film, is mainly all the long winded poetry, which, having read the book, I feel, does not compromise the story. I watched the film before reading the book, and I have to say, found the film more enjoyable, despite usually being a avid "the book is far better than the film kinda girl!" There are differences, but overall a film I have watched several times. If you love period dramas, then you will find this enjoyable, despite it being a mix of period and contemporary sections.

Visually impressive
I have long loved the novel, worn out my original copy in fact, and wondered how such a dense work could be translated into film. Of course a lot had to go. Three female characters, Val, Leonora and Beatrice were excised, and some of Beatrice's research given to Roland, and I have to admit I flinched to find the very English Roland morphed into an American. Additionally, most of the poetry was left out as well and the mythology, but having said that, what was retained is first rate. The basic story line and its final twist in the tail (proving that even the most diligent scholars can't know it all!) were intact, and it was visually stunning. Totally beautiful. All the characters and the locations were as I had imagined them. The costumes, the backgrounds both Victorian and 20th Century were spot on. It was worth buying the DVD to keep as an illustration of the book alone.

Definitely a good rendition of a very sophisticated and layered book
Definitely a good rendition of a very sophisticated and layered book. The original book is such a scholarly piece of fiction...the film had to simplify a lot of the layers. But they do a good job. A great cast & a well crafted film.I recommend reading the book though. It's quite something !

Four Stars
I find the story of discovering the secret life of Victorian poets fascinating and it is very well done with one exception. The hero gets rather tiresome. Surely there was no necessity to make him such a hick. But Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Ehle are excellent.

Fake
Really disappointed. Kept this for holiday only to find it wouldn't play in TC. Tried it on laptop and froze all the way through. It's obviously a fake copy as printing on disc is blurred!

Film review
This is an excellent DVD which is faithful to the original book.It was moving, it was clever switching between modern days and a hundred years ago.The characters were all plausible and we have already watched it several times.

A collection that is better than the some of it's parts....
These movies can be considered as the best from the rest. An ensemble of films vaguely reunited under the Possession hood. If you are looking for "Exorcist" spinoff, you will be disappointed. Only one movie can qualify as such (Good VS Evil). There is nothing technically wrong with these vintage pieces of B-Movie anthology, but there is also nothing really spectacular. Veteran Horror fans will want and love them, but the casual ones will live without them. Nevertheless, you will get a good bang for your buck."Good vs Evil" was meant to be a pilot for a TV serie. It is a very generic movie, as it suffers from the low-budget constraint. Kim Cattrall has a small role on this one. The priest against evil spirit scene is almost laughable when compare the classic movie featuring Linda Blair. Fine but nothing sopecial.. "Cathy's curse" is far better. Designed to scare you mercilessly, it partially achieves it's goal. This Possessed Doll flick is build around a fine scenario, so you will not mind the less than convincing special effects.. Some good moments I liked this one....."The Ghost" is my favorite one. Hammer productions fans will enjoy it a lot. Barbara Steele delivers a solid performance in this classic "Murdered husband is back to haunt them" film. You may get a feel of "Déjà vu", but you will watch it until the end. A Fine flick. "God made me do it" received some very good reviews on other websites. I. unfortunately, did not think much of it. It did not grab me. Anyway, 3 out of 4 is good score for such package.Extras are almost inexistent, but loading the DVDs with adders was never the intention.
