Happy with the Purchase!
Bought this not only for transportation, but for semi permanent storage space, so this cargo holder lived a straight two years on top of our car: Strengths: - Affordable: 18 CF (510 Litres) for the price is an excellent deal! - Form factor: the unit is deeper than most I've seen. It can easily accommodate a PACKED full size travel bag with some other smaller items, no problem! - Access and capacity: as mentioned earlier, I used this for two years straight and had all my camping gear such tents, folding chairs, water toys, shade tent, snow shoes, bike rack, rope, sleeping bags (yes this extra "trunk" fits a lot!), so it was important for me to access this from either side of the car and I could do that without an issue! - Waterproof: No water ever came in, and I wasn't worried even if it did since I had a couple holes in the bottom (had to put two holes in for the cargo holder to fit to my existing Outback racks - more on that below) - Flexibility and locking: because I had sleeping bags and sometimes pillows for camping, I would need to press down to be able to lock the top. The material used was very durable but had enough 'give' to work with the internal upward pressure of the sleeping bags and pillows and would lock fine! Talking of the lock, the design was simple and strong. Weaknesses: - Propping mechanism: I had a love-hate relationship with the propping mechanism. On one side, I loved the simple space efficient design (simplicity = durability here) BUT I often needed to play a balancing act - while standing on a step stool or the inside of the car - to get both side in. The problem was that the design allowed you to disengage by lifting up... But after you propped one side, you also needed to lift up to prop the other side, which would disengage the propping mechanism of the first side! It becomes much better after some practice 😅 - Fit: I drive a Subaru Outback and I made the carrier fit, but I needed to drill new holes. This wasn't an issue for me but consider that this may not be a "plug-n-play" solution - Base firmness: this comes with the caveat that I had to go a little wider as far as where the box sat on the racks, and as far as the weight and materials I stored in there (heavy metal bike rack), but the base did show some signs of sagging after two years of constant weight and weather. It wasn't enough to touch the roof of the car, and I could've supported it with a couple metallic beams, but the bases structure could be sturdier. The designers here relied on geometric stiffening but could had added a couple mms of material for extra durability. - Aesthetics: although generally appealing, the box is not the prettiest or slickest, but aesthetics were not my top priority. Also, the sticker that comes on it does not come of easily and leaves a dirty sticky patch, that, even if cleaned, will still show due to sun fading. So if you think you will want it removed, go ahead and do as soon as you get it (use some googone) and you should be good! In summary, this is a well priced high-capacity, high-functionality, high-durability cargo box that looks OK. I love it!

Great Purchase
I waited almost a year to write this review because I wanted to test this carrier on a number of road trips. After traveling about 2,000 miles with this carrier attached to my 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan, it passed every test with flying colors. First, it was easy to install. I had to drill two pre-marked holes to enable it to fit on the van’s cross rails, as the rail positions on this particular van are not fully adjustable but this was easy to do. The carrier also easily held everything I needed it to hold: Large suitcase, duffle bag, dog food container, small suitcase and a beach canopy, etc. The 18 cubic feet capacity should be large enough for most people’s needs. I followed the instructions and ensured that the heavy, large suitcase was positioned in the middle of the carrier and between the cross bars to support its weight. The locks work OK but are only made to keep the top of the carrier secured to the bottom. They are not high-quality security locks and wouldn’t serve that function. I discovered that if I manipulated the latches with one hand while inserting the key into the locks, the key slid in pretty easily. I can only assume that if the top comes off during travel, like I read in some reviews, the carrier was not locked properly. It was my experience that when locked according to the instructions, this carrier is very sturdy on the road. I traveled many miles in the rain with this carrier and water never got inside. It also sat in the rain in hotel parking lots overnight on several occasions and did not leak. Some water did pond on top of the carrier while sitting in the rain overnight but splashed off pretty easily when opening without getting inside. I covered the unused holes on the bottom with black duct tape to keep water out while driving. The carrier also withstood gusts of wind up to 60 MPH without any issues. I did not notice any additional wind noise from the carrier when driving at highway speeds and did not notice any loss in fuel efficiency, either. Overall, this was a five-star purchase for me. I don’t know that there is a better carrier for the price. I am glad I purchased it and highly recommend it to those considering a roof top cargo carrier.

High capacity and good value
I waited to review this, because it took me awhile to get it on the car and test it out. This week I embark on at 2000 mile road trip, the real reason I bought the carrier, so I’ll report back after that trip with any updates. My experience so far: my car didn’t come equipped with crossbars on which to mount the carrier, so I had to order those first and figure out how to mount them. Once I got those installed, installing the carrier was simple. I had to drill new mounting holes as my crossbars were not the default distance apart. That was a simple process, and the carrier has regularly spaced markings for drilling other holes. I was able to lift the carrier onto the roof of the car by myself (with a ladder). It’s unwieldy, but not heavy. The mounting hardware works well. I was immediately impressed by how capacious the carrier is. I loaded it with some test cargo in order to see how stable and quiet the carrier was on my roof. I was impressed. Again, I haven’t taken it for many hours at highway speeds yet, but in neighborhood traffic, and for short bursts of highway traffic, the carrier is stable and quiet. so far, I am pleased with this purchase. UPDATE: We just completed the cross-country trip, and this carrier performed admirably. There was some noise from wind, but nothing that really caused a problem. Clamped down tight before departure, none of the components that hold the carrier to the crossbars vibrated loose. The front clamp held fast. No adjustments were necessary at any point on the trip. Great performance and value!

Lots of extra room, sturdy
I bought this Item to take on a 2400 mile round trip to Yellowstone. Since I have never had a roof mounted Cargo Box before, I decided to take it on a 250 mile round trip to the coast to ensure I was comfortable that it would hold up. During the coastal trip I put this through all that paces I could think of and never had any issues. 1. Speed, drove at speeds exceeding 80 mph 2. Corners, went around a lot of sharp corners some as tight as a suggested speed 25 mph 3. Off Road, drove down to the edge of the river over potholes and rocks 4 Wind, coastal winds of 20 to 28 mph The Cargo box never slipped or moved at all, handled everything perfectly Update: I have taken this on more trips than I can count. Highly recommended I have around 8,000 miles logged with this on my roof rack and never had an issue. Anyone saying this had an issue with the top piece coming off didn’t put the front clasp in place or didn’t actually lock it. At 1/2 the price of the more well known brands it delivers. Takes me less than 10 minutes to get in place and I measure it when placing so it is completely centered. Since it is taller than most will fit on a shorter vehicle. Happy Travels to all and hope this review helps someone that was a newbie like me.

Perfect in every way! This is the one you want!
I drove a GMC Yukon XL for 16 years, finally downsized to a GMC Acadia. The only doubt I had was camping; we packed the Yukon to the gills, how would we fit the gear into the Acadia? According to the stats, the Acadia has 18 cu. ft. less cargo space than the Yukon - so the Jeggs was the perfect solution! I bought the crossbars for the Acadia from the dealer, not bad, about $150 for the pair. They are adjustable, but I set them bigger than the instructions said, I drilled holes in the outer dents (You'll see what I mean), which I think gave me 32" between the bar centers. I was a bit concerned about how I'd get it on the roof, especially since I'm 68. But it really was a snap to slide the bottom half up onto the rails from one side of the car. I was a bit concerned about scratching the paint, so I put a blanket around the roof rails, but it turned out not to be an issue. I stood on the back door frames to install and tighten the C-clamps that hold the box to the rails, but I'm tall. Someone shorter may need a small step stool. Having succeeded there, I slid the top onto the bottom the same way. I had the locks open (bars sticking down), then one side at a time I lifted the top to pull the bars into the slots on the bottom. Then I closed the locks on the drivers side. I'll admit the locks are a little fussy, but if you take your time and jiggle the key gently, it will go in and turn the bars. With the bars locked on the driver's side, I lifted up the lid on the passenger side, and used the front and back struts to hold it open. Cool! We went on a camping trip, and I fit 4 sleeping bags, two umbrella chairs, some blankets, a rug for inside the tent in the box, closed the lid and locked the other two latches. I put the key on the key ring with my car keys so I wouldn't go crazy looking for it. I could have stuffed more in the box, but was cautious on the maiden voyage. The latch on the front is easy to forget to latch, but you will hear it tapping the box and figure out what the noise is. It really is amazing, but your just can't tell it's up there! The car drove as normal as can be. They give you a little sticker for your windshield that has a picture of a car with a box hitting a tree, with a caption "Look Up!" Have to admit, I thought of going to the car wash, and then remembered that sticker! Being lazy about unloading after a trip, I left the box with all the stuff on the roof for about a week, and really didn't notice it. When I finally unloaded it, I reversed the process I used to put the two halves on the car, no problem at all. I set the lid on a table in the garage, then nested the bottom inside the lid, and left the hardware in the bottom half. I threw all the sleeping bags and blankets on top, no wasted garage space! One thing I suggest for Jeggs, is they might make their listings for this side-open box and the rear-open box more obvious, maybe have the rear-open box listing say in big letters "side open box also available", and vice-versa. I almost bought the rear open box, then realized I couldn't load it from the rear! Luckily I looked further down my original search list and found this side open box, which was actually a few bucks cheaper. I saw there were some negative reviews, but I would ignore them if I were you, especially knowing what I know now. You can spend more on boxes from other manufacturers, but you won't find one that is better. Easy to mount and remove, very sturdy and very roomy. Also a good price! You can't ask for anything more.

Buy with confidence
I wanted to add my experience for anybody interested as another reference. If I bought a Thule or Yakima with a high quality rack system, the cost would have been around $2K. I don't do alot of car traveling but I really needed something for this trip and was trying to keep costs low without ending up on a freeway with all my luggage flying off the top of my car. Details: Family of 5 in a 2005 Honda Pilot (incompetent Toyota dealership couldn't get my other car repaired on time after the fourth try) traveling about 1400 miles (700 each way). Thule was looking to be about $1K plus, a place called RackAttack was going to sell and install something for $800 ($650 parts, $150 install). Pilot has raised side rails, but I needed crossbars. Trip up was warm weather. Went 80-85mph most of the way. Snowed at destination, trip back was about half rain (lots of rain), and there was a fair amount of high cross winds. I had no issues at all and can recommend this product without reservation. I was worried about the head winds and didn't notice they sold a product with the hinge at the front. Wonder if that one holds up as well against side winds. Some comments: the front latch on my model seems a little flimsy and I would like it if it had a hole to add a pin/latch/etc to keep it from popping off (still completely worked, so just commenting). Also the side locks seemed like they could be of higher quality. I struggled a bit locking and unlocking them. I'm just quibbling here as this product clearly worked perfectly for me. I bought my crossbar at Harbor Freight (not known for quality tools, as I understand it) for $80. It's a Haul Master universal rooftop crossbar with a 150lb capacity, item 64877. It locked on to the roof rails rock solid with an allen wrench. The crossbars required a 27 1/2" distance between the pair so I had to drill additional holes in the botton off the Jeggs. The Jeggs manual talks about this even though their recommended distance is 24". I only drilled additional holes on the front of the Jeggs as that made more sense to me aerodynamically. The marks they have for the holes didn't line up perfectly with their mounting brackets so I had to enlarge the hole I made (which made me worry that they might shift, but that wasn't the case). You can do better than I did by using the mounting bracket as a reference for your drilling rather than using the indicated markers. I hand tightened the Jeggs using the provided knobs. I only kept soft luggage (duffle bags, etc., no suitcases) and clothes in the Jeggs so we didn't come close to the 110 lb mark. No reason to think hard shell cases would work, but I was trying to cut down on the weight. There was enough in there that things didn't slide around. This kept the luggage out of the car so we had more people room. Checked the rails and the sturdiness of the Jeggs at every stop. Never noticed any shifting or movement in cargo carrier or rails. Probably saved myself $1000 - $1500 with this setup. Hope this is helpful.

This company SUCKS
If you have any other option I would suggest it. This company provides horrible customer service follow through. I ordered and received this carrier in late February in preparation for a vacation trip in March. After inspecting the contents I found that it was missing the two keys for the locks which seem pretty important to securing the carrier during travel. I called JEGS and played “find someone to answer the phone”. I finally reached someone named Kevin and explained the problem. He asked for the number on the lock. As it was in my garage I told him I would get it and call back, which I did. Kevin did not answer the extension he provided so I pressed extensions until I was answered by someone in Custer service named Bree. Again explained what was going on and asked if she could provide Kevin with lock number which was 103, she said she would document everything and have Kevin send out replacements. After a week or so I had not received anything and called them again, this time talking to Ariel. She checked my order and said there were not any notes about replacement keys. Again went through the whole issue and told her we needed these as we were leaving on vacation in two weeks. She advised she would provide the information to the warehouse to get the keys sent. In addition I took photos of the lock to make sure they had the correct information. This was March 4, 2026. She responded same day and said she had emailed the warehouse and was just waiting for confirmation they shipped. Again not receiving anything I sent Ariel another email on March 7 asking for any update as we were leaving on March 13th. I received no reply and no keys. To insure the carrier would not open during the road trip I had to purchase a set of tie down straps to make sure the thing stayed closed. The product itself is nothing more than two drawn pieces of plastic, extremely poor quality and worth about 25% of what they charge. The whole experience with JEGS has been pretty frustrating and I would not recommend the product or the company for anything.

Workmanship needs work
I recieved this today. Hinges and cutouts were a little over a 1/4 inch off so I had to cut the plastic to fit the locking hinge. Same thing with the slot for the locking tab. You would think that for the money they would at least make sure everything lined up. I'm not saying don't purchase it because the materials seem to be of quality. I'm just saying that you need to be prepared to make modifications to make it operate. I've been in and out of it 10 or more times now I must say that it works well although in heavy wind the support bars tend to fall off their pins. I still like it.
