If you really miss the Scooby gang, then you’ll look past the comic’s flaws.
I’m not very good with reviewing comics, so I thought I’d do this a little differently than my normal reviews. Basically, I’m just going to discuss the pros and cons of this volume as I saw them in no particular order.Okay, so first off, I’m glad that I was able to have a piece of the Buffy world back. I definitely miss it (as my Hulu history can attest to). I was even glad to see two members of the Trio return. Even though they weren’t my favorite villains, I still enjoyed seeing that part of the show on the pages. And Willow got a big thumbs up, except for the weird flying thing. That was a little too far…Xander was fine. He didn’t make a strong positive or negative impact either way. Faith is still cool. And Buffy is pretty much Buffy. Now Dawn on the other hand, wth!?! I actually liked show Dawn for the most part, but her storyline in this comic was just way too much. I hope it gets resolved soon ‘cause it’s just weird. Oh, and there were some very minute glimpses of Angel and Spike. Very nice. Very nice.Okay, so here’s the more negative comments. One, minor characters like the extra slayers and villains were drawn super similar, so it was hard to tell some characters apart. Two, just because the writers didn’t have a budget in the show, doesn’t mean they should have gone crazy in the comics—it lost a little of its Buffy specialness with all the big action-y spy feels. Three, sometimes the jumps between characters/storylines was too confusing. Four, Dracula. Boo. Five, Buffy’s experimentation, while it could have been fine, just felt weird. I had no idea who the character was, and I want to know who Buffy’s potential love interests are. They should be worthy of her!Oh, last but not least, is a mix of good and bad. The future setting. I hated the language mess, but I somewhat enjoyed the plot development. It’s an interesting concept. All in all, the comic series isn’t for every Buffy the Vampire Slayer television show fan. But, if you really miss the Scooby gang, then you’ll look past the comic’s flaws just to get more time with the characters.3/5 stars*Note: I purchased a copy of this book for myself. This in no way affected my opinion/review.

Great but should be bigger
Love the story even if its a bit rediculous. Any buffy fan needs this and you cant beat that price! Just hate that its so small. Its like a 5th or 6th smaller than the volume versions but I rec it all the same. Id have droped twicethis for a hardcover but maby Im just complaining at this point. Love it, Buy it.

The bad fanfic sequel to the TV series with which it shares so little.
This is the first half of season 8 (first 20 of 40 total issues) which supposedly continues on from a few months after the TV show ended. Reading these comics I have to wonder how much of the show the writers and artists actually watched. I know Joss Whedon was involved in this which makes the story lines so perplexing.First the artwork. The artwork is very poor and the lack of detail makes it difficult to make out what exactly is happening at times. It is often not clear what character is been shown and takes a cue from the dialogue or other context throughout several panels to figure out who is present, even for core characters! Kind of ruins the big reveal moments when you only realise who it was a page and a half later. The artwork is at its best the first issue but declines throughout the series and is of a quality I would expect to see in the mid 80s.The main reason for such a low score is the story, not that their is much of one. First of all if you are hoping for lots of cool slayer action, forget it. There is of course some and a couple of battles but thanks to the art very little can be made out. Mostly it is all magic. The writers went completely overboard with the magic, its all magic shields, magic attacks, teleporting and flying all over the place, visiting goddesses. The actual slayers are like a side note.Story wise it makes no sense. It is difficult to clearly explain why while being vague to avoid spoilers. The characters and their actions make no sense. The characters actions are sometimes inconsistent with their TV characters. The big bad is a joke and the good guys response to it is an even bigger joke. Having read the issues that will make up volume 2 it sadly gets far, far worse, the second half of the season turned me off the Buffy comics altogether. Generally the season 8 storyline reads like bad fan fiction but it does have some reasonably good issues. The books starts out enjoyable and I flew through it hoping that the bad aspects (such as the bad guys) would turn out to be much better once more was revealed. The first issue starts out with such promise and is exactly what I would hope for, where are the main characters and what are they doing with an army of Slayers. By the end I was feeling a bit disappointed but there was hope for the future. Issues 21 - 40 (which will be collected as volume 2) took that hope and mashed it into the dirt. The events in Tibet is will have you thinking WTF were the writers thinking? Everything about it is nonsensical. So to sum up this rambling review, the art is terrible, the characters unrecognisable, the story starts out good but is weak and patchy. It is however by far the stronger half of season 8. I know nothing of seasons 9 and later so cannot say whether it is worth enduring 8 to get to them.
