Full rounded and very detailed.
I was very sceptical about the reviews but what the heck, I gave it a go. Bought in the Black Friday Sales at a reasonable price. I wanted to test it out on a piece of classical music. Respighi's Festival of Rome final movement has several layers of orchestration with multiple instruments playing at the same time. What I was hoping for was sound stage and separation but it's a very demanding piece for a DAC. I was so happy and amazed. This magical box of tricks coped so well. The sound was so smooth, rounded but bulky. Plenty of excitement and detail as well. I will be keeping this DAC for now and looking forward to more extended playing.

Audio heaven for £190
I upgraded from a topping dx3 pro (non +) 2nd revision with the akm4493 dac chipthat i used as a usb audio output for my pc and i really loved that dac but it was unbalanced and my yamaha hs7 speakers used to scream and buzz when i played 3d games on my pc ... no longer as i got me some 3m trs to trs balanced wbc eminence cables to go with the DL200 and it's now just game audio fantastic !My music sounds great although i'm still playing with the filters to really find my sweet spot.I also like to create music with ableton and other daws and the low end definition is definitely better and the mids and highs are clearer and have more space. The only gripe i have if you can even call it a negative is the size of the DL200 vs my dx3 pro, it's like having 2 dx3 pros side by side but who cares when the sound you get from this unit is outstanding for the money, if you want a good balanced dac and your budget is less than £200 grab one of these if you can 100% recommended !

Tested specs are as good as it gets, amazing value for money.
Tried with RCA and BT Ldac out. Usb in. Balanced out for Home Audio is??? Still, the option is there.Exceptionally good sound and value. The sister model DAC has been tested and rated as amongst the best specs going. Well beyond human perception. No reason this should be different.Interface could be better.I Hope it's reliable as some of the reviews have mentioned issues. Early days.I rarely write reviews but this really is as good a DAC as can be bought and truly exceptional value. Anyone who says a more expensive one "sounds better" really is fooling oneself in my honest opinion.

Superb DAC; you'd struggle to better this for the cost and a lot more on top, IMO
Superb DAC! No need to say any more really...Well; I will a bit...Have this connected to my Mac Mini Pro via USB; but also have a Wiim Pro that I've connected to it also via optical for Tidal streaming and AirPlay 2 playback for when I'm around the house and not at my Mac etcI'm not won over by the Wiim in all honesty; but the SMS DAC has seriously impressed meIt feeds my JBL active studio monitors and it replaces a much, much more expensive system of a Cyris One Cast integrated amp and KEF R3 speakersThey were absolutely superb; but I found that I lost the clarity that the previous studio monitors I had, had and I also wanted to use the funds that the Cyrus/KEF system was worth in another venture (car)...The DAC has replaced a Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface (which is superb); but the SMS has now shown me the soundstage that I was missing via the Scarlett Solo and it's really opened up.Punchier, tauter bass (deep with it too via the 8" woofers on the JBLs); the midrange for vocals is much smoother and detailed now and has lost some of the harshness that the Scarlett had and the top end isn't as bright any more, no grating at all, more so with older music that may not have been as well recordedWould highly recommend this DAC to anyone with a budget of up to £500, maybe more!Yes it has TRS outs; but you can get TRS to XLR cables etc very easily and it's worth it...I've no idea re the BT side of things as I don't use it sorry

Best value for money in the market
Best value for money in the market. Excellent DAC, not bright or edgy as often ESS-based dacs are described. And the headphone amplifier is also really good, surprisingly good I would say. I also have an R2R Dac and I really do not think I'be consistently able to tell one from the other. Only negative, but easy to live with, is that the balanced analog out it is not through XLR ports, so it requires purchasing different cable if you, like me, had already XLR balanced.

This SMSL product has design/production issues.
Faulty product received. I have the same issue as the other customer review left by German Amazon customer. This unit worked with USB input, however when in bluetooth input unit switched itself off after a very short time and is now not working. Unit powers on but display just flashes and will not allow selection of input or settings. This is either a design flaw or a bad batch of units from SMSL. Unit returned for refund, very disappointed.

Great for the money..
DAC sound is a little too much on the bright side for.my personal taste but it's a fantastic bit of kit for the money and the headphones amp is superb at the price

Serious QC issues/Upate: 2nd Unit very good!
Sadly the volume knob, which also handles everything else in the menu (in case the remote fails or you don't want to use it), got stuck more often than not. Very difficult to turn, and once pushed in for a menu change it often wouldn't come out without applying some seriously undue pressure - or pull, to be more precise. Sound quality was good, I haven't heard any difference though between the different sound modes, which I am not sure is down to my ears, a faulty device or something else. Shame about the waste of resources, it had good reviews online (YT in particular).Update 12/23: Based on glowing online reviews bought another unit. This one works fine (so far). Sound is very good on my Sennheiser HD560s, a clear upgrade compared to the much cheaper and slightly muffled Fosi audio q4. Different fine tuning modes, the main reason for my purchase (and something Fiio and Topping don't have) are very subtle but audible. All in all a very happy customer now. Hence updated from two to four stars.
