Just the Torah. No commentary. Good type and print. Good translational flow.
The copy I received did not seem to suffer from any of the issues reported by individuals that gave this book a bad review. I almost did not buy this because of those reviews but I am glad I did because it is lightweight and easy to hold in one hand while reading (because of the lack of any extra-biblical text additions that would make it bigger, thicker and heavier). This book ended up meeting all of my expectations. Great for tossing in the book bag and carrying around with you. Now, when I say this book is JUST the Torah, I mean there is no dedication, no foreword, no explanation of the apparatus of the underlying MSS, no copyright information, no commentary, and nothing but a blank page after the final verse of Deuteronomy. There is also no reference to the Translation used, although it reads very clearly. (I am mistaken; the first page has an index for the starting page of each of the five books). Okay, but that aside, nothing else but the translation in English. Also the Title contains the sentence, "The Five Books Moses". *sigh* So close. Okay, so if it doesn't drive you crazy that it doesn't say, "The Five Books of Moses", then you should almost certainly like this. I didn't buy this to spend time staring at the cover so I didn't even notice the omission of that "of" until after I had read it. There was no glue smearing on the cover which I sometimes see on paperbacks with this type of smooth cover. I was unable to determine the version of the translation based on Deuteronomy 13:5 which in this edition says, "That prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death, because he has spoken rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to draw you aside out of the way which the LORD your God commanded you to walk in." That aside, I came across nothing while reading it that threw a red flag. I personally stick to the more literal translations, in case that information is useful to you. I will order another copy for study and for marking up with highlighters (I always keep an unadulterated copy for my reference library). (Note: the side margins are only about 1/4" which makes for a more compact edition, but also leaves no room for notes or journaling of any kind.) Finally, I abused the binding quite severely to make opened faced pages completely flat as I read this book. The binding did not crack or fail in any way. If anyone manages to figure out what version this is, please leave a note about that in response to this review. I checked all English versions on BibleGateway.com and although some were very close, I did not find the exact wording as I have listed it here.
