The AVL Production Perspective: A How-to Guide for Serving on the Audio, Video, and Lighting Teams at Your Local Church Paperback – May 17, 2023

This is a must read for those who volunteer at a church or are interested in serving and stepping out of their comfort zone. Practical advice rooted in biblical truth.

This book is a very welcomed encouragement, insight, and challenge to me into this area of serving! MT Losey takes an interesting and vulnerable venture into the multi-faceted AVL serving and gives insight on how we too can plant the Word in our hearts to help us grow closer to Jesus, as well as grow relationally with our teams and the attendees through what generally appears to be a behind-the-scenes serving area. From the way he writes, I suspect that he is a recovering perfectionist, because he does not let us get away with haphazard work, but excellence is the goal, --and here's where his book comes alive-- while challenging us to not put on blinders to all the wondrous, miraculous, humbling work that God is doing in our hearts and calling us to be part of on what sometimes may seem an everyday, ordinary church service or event. Losey really uses his technical expertise to point us back to the Author and patch us back to the Vine, to really start looking for ways to practice the presence of God even while we are serving. There are ridiculously relatable, funny stories of the fast-paced, whew!-we-made-it-through-those-added-service-elements-this-weekend type of antics that feel uncannily similar to my own experiences serving in AVL. I am going to use this book to help me give a new shape to my own AVL serving role in order to keep me from becoming distracted by performing excellent production and instead to use production in church as it was intended—to point back to Jesus. I would really love for him to write a workbook or devotional that could be used alongside this book as an AVL group study or training. I recommend this to those new to production and those who have been serving in production for years!

To be clear, if you are looking for something that will help you technically and give you the inside scoop on the secrets to production this is not a book for you. If you are however looking for more encouragement and insight on how production can play a role in your life and your church then take the plunge!It will point you towards the heart behind serving and how you play a greater role that goes far beyond whatever letter of AVL you tend to gravitate towards. This is not going to be a book you pull out when you need to problem solve a technical problem. It will not give you the answers to the most complex production issues your church, ministry, or non-profit might be dealing with each week. What it will bring is a perspective on what serving in the Kingdom of God looks like. Pick up this book if you want to be challenged on how to approach your serving and encouraged to keep God as your primary focus while doing it. Wherever you are at in your serving journey, or your team is at in their history of production, this book will help show you how you might see God along the way. You could be preparing for the next Sunday, the next event, the next Easter weekend, or maybe nothing at all... this book will help you acknowledge how God can both use your serving to impact others and how others and your serving can impact you!

This book really challenged me in all the best ways possible. Entering the production world can seem "a little far out there" amidst the typical "church-goer", while it also brings excitement for the tech-obsessed who are so encouraged to bring their gifts to the table. Whether you come from a background with years of experience or you are now entering into the scene behind the booth, M.T. Losey ushers in a thought-provoking storytelling that relates to anyone, no matter your experience or role...and often in a quite humorous way. (what we do as production team members often comes with high demands, laughable misunderstandings, and a whole lot of fun along the way, does it not?) M.T. Losey prefaces that this book is not to enhance your skills, or work on finding "the cure" to your tech diagnoses, but rather to find the cure at the heart of our service, the why behind what we do, and to go beyond our limits when it comes to our spiritual life behind the board. His writing encouraged me to question the effectiveness of my ministry at the root -- the heart and at the heart in my relationship with Christ. We should be encouraged to ask harder questions in the production realm, for it is an easier area to serve and to do and to be behind the scenes...making it easier for us to (sometimes) let go of God and focus on what has to get done. This read was a great re-centering for me, to let go and let God do the work behind the scenes of my heart in order to communicate the Gospel through the work we are blessed enough to be called to.

If you're involved with production, you should read this book! If you're in church production, you have to read this book! It's written by a production guy for production guys and gals! It's going to help you get better at the things that don't get talked about a lot. Things like attitude, priorities, heart posture, and doing the best with what you have been given, which in turn can make for a very long and beneficial experience in production. It also provides some hilarious stories that you'll be able to relate to in one way or another if you've been in or around the production world for any time at all.
