They are semi-sheer, letting in probably 40-50% of the light. This was necessary for us, as we have a lot of plants that have high light requirements. However, they provide 99% privacy, unlike most semi sheer curtains that are pretty much transluscent or transparent. I turned on the lights indoors at night and walked outside to look through -- you can only see silhouettes of things less than 5 inches away from the window. If something is more than 5 inches from the window, people can't even see a silhouette, which is absolutely incredible. These are equivalent to the Lumos curtains, which can cost $250+ per pair of curtains of equivalent size. For 10% of the price of Lumos curtains, you get something equivalent that provides almost full privacy yet all the light requirements. They DO NOT require any ironing or washing; they look great right out the box. My windows are about 100 inches wide; I bought 4 pairs per window for about $17 each pair (desertcart was running a sale for the cream yellow ones). In general, you want the total width of the curtains to be around double the width of the window. For example, if your window is 100 inches, you want the sum of all the panels to be 200+ inches, which requires at least 4 54 inch curtains. If your window is only 50 inches, you just need one pair.
