Theory of Music Workbook Grade 1 (Trinity Guildhall Theory of Music): Theory Teaching Material Sheet music – 10 Jun. 2007

As a piano teacher I have tried many different theory workbooks. I use these books most of the time now. They provide very clear step-by step explanations and exercises to build the student's knowledge. They are almost self-contained but you do need a teacher to check your answers as none are provided for the exercises. As the title makes clear, the syllabus covered is Trinity Guildhall, not the Associated Board, and there are some differences, but the ABRSM does accept Trinity Grade 5 theory for those doing its grade 6 practical exams.

My daughter was a beginner student, this book was recommended by her music lesion tutor to help her read and write commonly used musical symbols, to providing a firm grounding in notation. This book has help my daughter to master the elements of music, including clefs, notation, intervals, pitch, musical texture, and chord construction

This workbook is very clear and well set out. I am using it to teach my son who is 10. Although I have no great knowledge of music theory myself, the explanation are very clear and step by step which allows me to teach it myself saving lesson time. It helps to have a piano to try out and demonstrate the points. It'll be interesting to see how far we can get before I need to handover to a professional.

These books are good and accessible. Put ABRSM to shame really. Easily followed, well explained. Kids are never riveted by this stuff but it's well set out and clearly explained.

Recommended by my Piano Teacher as someone just starting to learn to play. I am an adult learner and do not intend to do any examinations still told that this book would be invaluable to learn reading music in general.

Bought one each for my 2 kids, they've used some of it but not all despite the fact that one is sitting grade 1 tomorrow and the other in a couple of months. It will come into it's own in the next few months though as they build on their existing theory knowledge.
