Actually works with hard wood logs and safer to use than other types
I do actually like this Kindling Cracker - the only downside for me is the (very) high price considering what it is. That said, I have tried other design log splitters and never felt comfortable with the “open bladed” type which I had originally ordered and thought would have been better in use It soon became apparent that the open blade would or could be a potential issue especially when trying to split my hard wood logs (seasoned oak, ash etc) and if too much force was used to hammer the log, or it split easier than expected, there was always the chance that you would follow through with the hammer, or worse, one of your hands (you use one hand to steady the log for the initial hit) and strike the open blade. Hammers can be replaced - you hands cant :( So, with the above in mind, I searched for something that at least on the face of it, looked safer to use. There are plenty of this type available on line (with the halo above the blade), but either ridiculously cheap, looked quite spindly or very little credible reviews other than “best thing Ive bought…” which is no real use Finally settled on this Kindling Cracker - yes it is expensive, and realistically I feel it should really be around the £50-£70 price bracket, but in its defence, it is well thought out, very sturdy and appears to be a single cast of metal so shouldnt flex under duress like some of the collapsible types I have seen The blade appears blunt when inspected, certainly not knife sharp but could still cause damage, but does appear to work when splitting logs - if the edge was any finer it would soon dull after a few logs had been split, so think this is the best compromise between sharpness and longevity of the edge It is super easy to split soft wood logs but with a little more effort it also works well with my hard wood logs too with the “halo” actually helping to support larger logs (keeping one hand out of the way) prior to hitting them with the hammer. Smaller logs dont require as much effort to split, but you need to support them first, but one small tap will bed the log onto the blade and you can then remove your supporting hand while striking with the hammer The best thing I like about the “halo” at the top is that it actually acts as a safety rail that stops the hammer following through if the logs splits too easily - this prevents the hammer, or more importantly, your hands getting anywhere near the blade when splitting logs Obviously common sense should prevail when using this type of tool, but I feel this is certainly worth considering if you are the nervous type or have limited mobility issues and think if used sensibly, can last you a lifetime and will your hands out of harms way too. Which is nice :)

Expensive but, Pay more Get more!
I was a little nervous about buying this wood splitter due to the price since I wondered if other tools would be as good with less cost. However, I'm very pleased to report its an excellent product and works very well. I can appreciate the product for its well thought out design and quality of build. The product is made out of cast iron which makes it very strong and able to take quite hard impacts when splitting the wood. So far I've managed to split lots of kindling with little effort and it really does make doing the job so much easier and safer. I really like the design since its very simple but really makes things simple and easy to use since you have lots of control over the point in which the splitting force is applied. Also having the top loop does make it far safer compared with using a hand axe. I would recommend screwing it down to a stable heavy object however, since it will just make it more stable and easier to use.

Brilliant bit of kit!
Wow! What a great piece of kit! I've been looking longingly at these for a while now, but wasn't sure I could justify the cost. Is it really worth it, just for chopping smaller branches? Oh yes it is! All those lengths which are just a bit too small to stand up properly on the chopping block: pop them in the top, tap a couple of times to settle them, then give them a whack, and down they go. The advice to screw it to a block is good: they do tend to jump around a bit, if not pinned down. The holes in the base are big, though: much bigger than any screw or washer which I had to hand, so I had to bodge it with some odd little brackets, but once that was done - perfect! (It would be nice, for this price, if the seller included two large washers...) The size is perfect - there are smaller ones available, cheap copies by the look of them, but this one is large enough to take a decent-sized log and, exactly as per the videos, you can split and re-split as many times as you like, depending on if you just want to split smaller logs, or to make actual kindling. And it is so much safer than using an axe! The picture shows less than ten minutes of fun - err, I mean, effort.

Good strong piece of kit
Strongly built, (avoid those cheap copies) easy to use. Best raised up a little on a stump or similar, it's actually quite small, but very effective. Only slight drawback is the small-ish top circle, which limits the size of log to be split. Bigger size version is pricey but worth considering. 2-3 logs split generates a big bag of kindling, so the savings are obvious, definitely recommend.

Easy to use
Works really well. My kids can split down kindling with ease. Quite pricey but should last a lifetime.

You'll need a lump hammer and a good surface. Works v well. Don't scrimp on the cheaper versions.
You'll need a 2 KG hammer as well, possibly a 1 KG at a pinch. You'll also need a shock absorbing surface. Don't attempt it on your flag stones for example. You can use the grass, but you'll be stooping a lot. It's designed to be screwed into a very large log/stump, but it will rust if you leave it out. I use it on a raised area of gravel, by a low wall, which works v well. If you've got all that it'll chew logs quicker than a hatchet. It's not effort-free, but easier I think. Good for making kindling as well. All in all, worth it. Don't scrimp on the cheaper versions. This takes a beating, so the cheaper ones will simply break.
