Not perfect but a promising look at what a quality gay romcom could be
Bros was a refreshing breath of fresh air in the canon of gay movies, it's a movie with a bit of money behind it which has great production values, and it's a gay movie where no-one ends up dead or miserable at the end, a point which is referenced with some humour towards the beginning of the film. Breathe easy, it has a happy ending. For me the first half of the film was far superior to the second half, there were laughs to be had, and it had lovely moments of heart, and some nice sexiness as well. It's the story of two people who on the surface you think shouldn't click, but surprisingly they do. Luke Macfarlane was excellent throughout as the macho "bro", his acting is strong and believable. The film is let down by Billy Eichner’s character however, his acerbic opinionated Bobby is tolerable to begin with and there’s a nice interplay between the two main leads with a touching scene on the beach from Eichner where he explains why he’s the way he is. HOWEVER the justification that because he’s been supressing and hiding who he is during his early life should now give him carte blanche to be incredibly rude, indulge in never ending opinionated lecturing, and to disregard everyone else’s feelings because his are the other only opinions that matter is awful and as the film descends into cliché it he becomes difficult to like or watch. Apart from one scene near the end where he apologises to his work group, it’s always everyone else who’s in the wrong, never him, and his apologise are just throwaway and without weight. The second half obligatory breakup and reunion was clumsily scripted and executed, and Eichner’s poor attempt to cover the fact that he can’t cry on cue made what should have been a touching and emotional moment painful and killed the immersion. I hope Bros leads to more mainstream gay focused films in the future, but I sincerely hope they are not hampered by clumsy scripting and characterisation as this was.

Good movie, great edition
The movie deserved better than what it got when it was released. Maybe the poster was a miss. Bros + the guys touching there butt was maybe too weird 4rd degrees/meta for a nice and first mainstream gay romantic comedy! (Dudes could have been a better title) I really enjoyed it a LOT! and the bluray is full of interesting extras! A great home video edition made with love!
