Jamie Dornan (50 Shades of Grey, The Fall) plays Joe, the friend and unconventional carer for Hannah, played by Oscar winner Jean Simmons (Spartacus, Guys & Dolls), as she spends her later years alone in her Norfolk country home. When Hannah's son, Robert (James Wilby) arrives with his teenage daughter played by Ophelia Lovibond (Guardians of the Galaxy) and younger son he becomes shocked with his mothers intimacy with her young friend. Emotions and tensions between the group begin to surface and it might take a tragic incident to bring them together. Writer/director David Rocksavage has produced this unique drama that explores the complexities of family relationships.

Thoughtful
I liked this movie but it probably isn't to everyone's taste. It is slow moving with very little dialogue but I became engrossed. Very well acted.

I really wanted to enjoy this film
I really wanted to enjoy this film. It seemed to have a good cast. Sadly I did not enjoy it - in fact, I gave up on it at just about 50% in. The cinematography was really good. Some beautiful bucolic scenes with great attention to detail like birdsong. But oh my the script! It was feeble and the structure of the film poor as well.It was as if either the writer or the director were making it up as they went along and did not go back afterward to edit and tighten up the plot line. Jean Simmons gave a highly professional performance as one would expect from a star actress from bygone times. She turned her sections from pig's ear to almost silk purse. The oh so beautiful Jamie Dornan gave us a deep and sensitive performance that far outweighed the quality of the script. Well done him. He really needs to be doing better work. Like the Fall and more recently, Anthropoid. Others were more workmanlike in their performance and I have to say that the actor playing Jean Simmons son gave one of the worst faux piano playing scenes I have seen for a long time. Sadly I can't recommend this film.

I enjoyed the film
I enjoyed the film. Jean Simmons was lovely. I thought the plot was a bit weak, however. It didn't really have any point to why the son disliked Joe (Jamie Dornan) so much, although, yes, it was obvious why he mistrusted him. But there was no drama, nothing to connect to in the story. I was also left wondering what really changed the son's mind. Once again, no clearly defined moment to acknowledge and connect the storyline.I felt like they really missed an opportunity to use Jamie's talent. Mostly he was just broody and ... there. It's as if the script was a wonderful framework for a story, but no one filled in the plot. The best word I can think of to describe the movie is "serene". And, that's okay.

Shadows in the Sun review
Film was much shorter than I expected and did not live up to its' description on the cover, however the story was lovely as was the location and background music, I thought the acting by the main stars was superb, especially Jean Simmons.
