I get from the description that these are wired and therefore I was wondering what if the battery for?Do they not just work by being plugged in?

The battery is needed if you want to use the noise cancelling. To me the headphones don't sound good without the noise cancelling, regardless of the level of background noise. Activating the noise cancelling seems to complete my change the sound characteristics of the headphones for some reason
