Andalou shampoo Lavender and Biotin is labeled gluten-free and contains hydrolyzed barley protein? How can it be gluten free?

Hi there! Thank you for your inquiry regarding Gluten-Free and Andalou Naturals. Truth in labeling is one of our core values here at Andalou and we take extra care in selecting the most efficacious ingredients, ensuring that our natural products really do what they claim and mean what they say; which is why we tested all of our products on behalf of the Celiac Sprue Association (tests performed by the Food Allergy & Resource Program.) The CSA evaluated our formulations and confirmed the products to be gluten-free, meaning they tested below the gluten limit of quantitation of 5 parts per million–much less than the standard requirements of 20 parts per million for food product. The processing and refinement of wheat germ into oil dissolves the majority of gluten proteins making it essentially gluten free (per the limit of quantitation) and the hydrolyzing process of our barley and wheat involves fermentation during which the gluten is naturally dissolved by enzymes. These are important factors for someone with Celiac disease and also helps explain how a wheat derived ingredient can be present in a formulation and yet the finished formula is verified gluten-free. By using these innovative ingredients we are able to offer clean products that are clinically proven to work.
