A Looney take a movie classic
'Carrotblanca' is a 1995 'Looney Tunes' short based on the classic film 'Casablanca', and is a real little treat for an avid fan of the Loonies. The animated characters basically take on the roles of the people in the film, and the main players here are Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Tweety (played in the style of Peter Lorre), Yosemite Sam, Pepe Le Pew and Penelope Pussycat. Watch out for fleeting cameos from Sam Sheepdog, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig and many more. I'm not usually a fan of the latter-day made 'Looney Tunes', but this was a good one. Beautiful artwork, good voice acting, and a fun plot makes 'Carrotblanca' something of a 'must'.As well as this little nugget, this 1996 released video tape contains the following extra shorts, which make up a healthy mix of old and new: 'Dripalong Daffy' (1951), 'Hare do' (1949), 'You Ought to be in Pictures' (1940), an early exercise of combining live-action and animation, 'The Scarlet Pumpernickel' (1950), and the much more recent 'Box Office Bunny' (1991). Although I don't care for the last one, the vintage stuff is good, especially Chuck Jones' directed mini-masterpiece 'The Scarlet Pumpernickel', starring Daffy Duck, as well as Porky Pig, Sylvester, and cameos from Henry Hark, and Elmer Fudd. The common theme of this VHS is that all the cartoons on here are based on films and theatre in some way, and I am giving this compilation a four star on the strength of 'Carrotblanca' and 'The Scarlet Pumpernickel' alone, but without them, I would have dropped a star.
