If the water freezes, will it destroy the container?

Water increases approximately 9% by volume at freezing. The formula to figure out how much liquid water to fill so as not to crack the container is: (Container size) divided by 1.09 = water volume fill not to be exceeded if freezing e.g. I have a 18.5 liter (5 gallon) container. So 18.5L / 1.09 = 16.97L which is approximately 4.5 gallons. Hope this helps! (BS-Chemistry)
