I’ve been using the Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug for a couple of months now, and I’m really happy with its performance. Here’s my in-depth review:Setup & Installation:The setup for the Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug was just as straightforward as the indoor model. The Kasa Smart app is user-friendly, and the instructions are clear. It took me about 5 minutes to get it connected to my Wi-Fi network and add it to the app. I also connected it to Alexa and Google Assistant, and voice control worked flawlessly without any additional configuration. No hub required—just plug it in, connect it to Wi-Fi, and you’re ready to go.Design & Durability:This plug is designed specifically for outdoor use, and it shows. The build quality is solid, with a weather-resistant casing that’s rated to handle rain and extreme temperatures (it has an IP64 rating for water and dust resistance). I’ve used it in light rain and during high humidity, and it’s still working like new. The two outlets on the plug are independently controlled, so you can automate and control each outlet separately, which is perfect for outdoor lights or holiday decorations.The plug has a robust, thick cord that seems durable and capable of standing up to the elements. It also comes with a cover that helps protect the outlets when not in use, which is a nice touch for prolonging the life of the device.Performance & Functionality:The Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug performs excellently. However, I would love to see this feature on future versions.Drawbacks:One minor downside is that it only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks, just like the indoor model. This means if you have a dual-band router, you may need to configure your Wi-Fi settings for it to work properly. I've had one of these for about 6 months now. It's on my roof deck with exposure to prevailing wind and rain, limited sunshine. So far, it's worked flawlessly.I do have several other Kasa devices (lights, socket, camera) so was fairly familiar with the app and set up. For me it was very easy to add this device and set some schedules. We use it to control a couple of sets of roof light strings, and I love that there are two sockets on here that I can control and set timers for individually. Great flexibility.I haven't yet seen any evidence of issues with water getting in, despite being in a location where it gets a reasonable amount of direct rain. Survived one Northern Hemisphere winter and feels like it'll last through many more.Solid reliable product, decent app support behind it, it just works!

This works perfectly with the app, is durable, simple to setup, and great on its own. Highly recommend just for that.The rest of my review is using it as an advanced programmable switch using unofficial/unsupported code on a DIY project:The reason I specifically went with Kasa was because there's a free (unofficial) project called python-kasa from which you can write code to control the switches. For instance: I have an outdoor heater that I want to keep on or off based on the temperature on an outside thermometer. Using the python-kasa API (again, it's not official nor supported by Kasa) I coded a simple script in Python that runs on my Raspberry Pi that regularly checks the outdoor temperature, and if it's above a certain temp it makes sure the switch is off, and if it's below that temp it turns it on.There are an endless amount of things you could program to control the switch.

I love my Kasa devices! I have 50! Mostly at home but 5 at a second location and 3 at a third location. I can see and control them all easily from anywhere with the Kasa App.These are similar to Tapo devices and can be controlled in the Tapo App. I have not made the switch to Tapo devices since I like the Kasa so much. I also prefer the ease of use and overall usability of the Kasa App. I did try the other app but it seemed less user friendly.I’ve heard suspicion that Kasa might be phasing out, but have not heard evidence of that. I certainly hope they are not discontinued or no longer supported because I’ve spent a small fortune on all my devices over the last 5-6 yearsThese particular plugs are on my porch and I plug strip lights and camera into. I’ve had no issues with them.

Smart home things are really helpful. My favorites are hooked up with Alexa so I just ask out loud for whatever to do what I want.Having an outdoor smart switch is the best! Ours is the place string lights on the patio and (most importantly) lights on the steps are plugged in. The two plugs are controlled separately too!It is super helpful to be able to turn the outdoor light on from my phone at out and about at night. It makes walking down the steps from the street possible without a flashlight.Setting the switches up to the WiFi using the Tuya app was easy. And now saying, “outdoor lights on” illuminates the patio and stairs!

The Kasa Outdoor smart plugs work great. They are relatively easy to set up using the Kasa app. Once setup, you can even control them using Alexa or Google. We use ours mostly for holiday lights and it's super useful to just tell Google to turn on the holiday lights. Or even create automations that turn them on and off at certain times. Overall these plugs are super useful and perform exactly how I want/need them to perform. I would highly recommend for anyone needing smart plugs.
