Logitech M187 Ultra Portable Wireless Mouse, 2.4 GHz with USB Receiver, 1000 DPI Optical Tracking, 3-Buttons, PC / Mac / Laptop - Black, (910-002731)

Firstly - It is small - smaller than I had expected at only 11cms from nose to tail on the top, curved part. Anyway, this size suits me as I have fairly small hands, and I'm beginning to think the pain I suffered in the back of my right hand could have been down to my old mouse which was much bigger than this. This one sits just under my fingers with the fattest part (of the mouse) resting in the fleshy part of my hand where fingers meet palm, which is perfect for me. If you have big hands I would not recommend it....it is sold, after all, as a "mini mouse", so take heed. It's light and very responsive, the wheel is quiet and smooth, and the little dongle thing is small and unobtrusive; I use this on my laptop whilst sitting on a fabric covered sofa and have absolutely no problem with it moving over such a surface, Okay, so it doesn't turn itself off, but the little switch on its bottom is easy enough to locate and slide into the Off position. I had expected to see a red light underneath it, like my old mouse, but apparently this is an "invisible optic" so doesn't light up. The packaging was an absolute swine to get into - one of those rigid-slice-your-fingers-to-ribbons plastic things, which I immediately passed to himself whilst I sat back and watched him wrestle with it. I do understand why these items are packaged in this way, but it is not user friendly. One or two reviewers have said they found this flimsy - not my experience. Also that the on/off switch rattles, or is difficult to use - again, this is not the case with mine. All in all a good buy for an effective little beast.

As a small lose-it-in-the-palm-of-the-hand basic minimum-function mouse this symmetrical Logitech M187 is an ideal size. I need a small one so I can relax my fingers on the mouse mat, and thus avoid RSI in the back of the hand resulting from lifting fingers clear of the buttons on bigger mice for most of the time. Or I can use it hidden in a pocket at a presentation; the invisible LED is a useful advantage here. It is also very light weight with only the single supplied AAA 1.5V Alkaline battery (NOT Lithium). The instructions are comprehensive but the size of type has shrunk in the last few years and no longer so easily read by normal people with normal eyesight. Fortunately they are not really necessary, because all I need do is plug in the Dongle to the working computer, switch on the mouse, and it works. The LEDs are invisible, with no red glare to dazzle us, so there is no indication that it is working apart from the pointer on the screen moving when the mouse moves. As usual with a high resolution mouse (1000dpi) it is necessary to hold it steady when clicking, and being very light it could be easy for inadvertent movement to occur, but I’ve not found this is a problem. Being a basic function mouse its resolution is not adjustable, but then the 1000dpi is enough for most applications. The scroll wheel is very smooth and works almost as well as my old corded PS2 XScroll mouse The USB Dongle can be stored inside the mouse next to the battery in a dedicated slot. There is also an On/Off switch for when the mouse is to be left unused for a while. This convenience for neat storage makes it very suitable for one of the normal applications I will be employing it for; living in a slim laptop case and brought out for presentations, handily concealed in a pocket to control the computer while wandering about interacting with the audience. The dimensions of the mouse itself are; 49.4 mm (1.94 in) x 81.9 mm (3.22 in) x 31.8 mm (1.25 in). Being symmetrical is a great advantage because I regularly swap the mouse between Right and Left handed use to minimise RSI in shoulders and the back of the hands. Battery life in normal use is about six months for a Duracell AAA alkaline. The wireless range is more than I was able to test, ie more than eight metres line of sight. The Logitech claim of ten metres seems to be reasonable. It does not seem to interfere with my 2.4GHz wireless cameras or the wifi, unlike a previous wireless mouse that I had to bin because of this. Alas it is not Bluetooth, but then so far I've yet to find one this small to replace the tiny Bluetooth mouse I lost a few years ago. I’m still looking. Reliability is a concern raised by some other reviewers, but my first M187 is still working well after a tough life so I bought another for another laptop. Edit 11th April 2025 I spoke too soon. The ten-year old mouse began to be intermittent on the left button. The solder on one pin had crystallised. Re-soldering fixed it. See my picture.

It's a great, responsive little mouse. Compact but fully functional! Ergonomic if you've got smaller hands, otherwise it might feel a little cramped to hold for long periods of time. It is pretty much pocket sized though so very good for travel! Pic is of the logitech against my average sized Microsoft mouse, and it really is small! The scroll wheel is smooth but the material gives it excellent grip anyway, the buttons are clicky and responsive, and while you might think it's not working when you can't see the red light for tracking (it's just invisible, rather than the standard red light) , it's very accurate! Absolutely fantastic for a tiny, affordable little wireless mouse!
